Hi guys - that screenshot  was during the automatic setup procedure - the EQ as well as the frequency curve changes every second or so 25 times - so thats not the final result - it was just during the autosetup run - maybe i should rather post what the final result looked like instead of a picture during the run but i will do that when i borrow a tripod and redo it - sorry i didnt take a picture of the final resultant curve and when i left that section of the menu - if i go back now its all is a screen that shows up flat and ready for manual adjustment and i would have to redo the adjustment to get that pic but as you guys pointed out its probably better off on a tripod (theres a different microphone neck to fit on a tripod as well)

i also realized that the camera click could have affected the run - so i redid it and sat quietly immediately thereafter - and as for setting manually - i tried for around an hour and i merely succeeded in getting the bass to sound like it was a delayed drunken version of the sound echoing after itself but the autosetup is easy and that good  ;)

i agree that the listening position could possibly do with some adjustment and i am going to definitely try that out ie using a chair in front of the couch but the hassle then is i dont have huge width or depth in the room and i will be getting very close to the speakers - either way i will try it out and report back but the last time i tried it out i didnt hear too much of a difference

i can try and borrow a tripod - we did use one with the Auddyssey microphone for setting up the alpine car headunit using the imprint and MulteQxt setup - so the owner of the sub does have a tripod lying in his car (plus he probably has a few hundred in stock at his warehouse ..... he sells camera's too) and i have the same car deck as well so insteadof buying the imprint unit i just used his cos the results sit in flash memory and you never ever lose those and they only have to be redone if you change the hardware - in the meantime this was just a temporary quick solution just to be able to get to hear the sub playing at all - and yes i agree it could have been suffering from reflections off that surface cos the one i heard over at my buddy's store just sounded smoother - so yes its a great idea to redo it with a tripod and i will do it a bit away from the wall and on a chair in front of the couch

i faced it downward in an attempt to get the positioning closer to where exactly my head would be and thats around the height but i did not really think about reflections off that flat surface - so definitely that played a role in the settings - thanks for that

Reckon you are sitting to close(2m) to that 50" screen ???
So I finally got my new Panasonic V20. Set it up yesterday and am currently in the process of running it in before calibration.

The wife is super happy with it, I'm still mourning the loss of my old set and getting accustomed to the new one (some things it does better, some things not). Overall though, I'm very happy with the purchase.

Unfortunately I still don't have the 360 or my BD player hooked up yet as I'm still waiting for the cables I ordered online (much cheaper than the in store rip-offs), which hopefully should arrive today.

Panasonic 50" V20 (seated distance 2m) / Onkyo 705 Reciever / KEF IQ3 fronts, IQ6 centre, 3001 rears / 10" Velodyne SPL-Ultra / Onkyo ND-S1 i-Pod Dock / Sony S350 BDP / Samsung HD-PVR / Xbox 360

not really - if you look at THX recommendations they suggest for a 50" TV you should be around 5 to 7,5 feet away for the most immersive experience  when viewing an HDTV

heres a link

http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/home-theater/hdtv-set-up/

SMPTE requirements are pretty similar and most people sit too far away from their TV's - this is still fine cos for example our TV broadcasting standards are not fully HD yet - so to avoid seeing the blocking and pixellation that results from scaling a small res picture to a higher res picture sitting a wee bit further away is fine but to be honest you want to be as close as THX would be reccomending per each resolution

heres a chart that shows how distance recommendations vary according to the resolution of the content

Actually how much further can you sit and still make out the fine detail in a 1080p picture?

I sit 2.1m from my 50" plasma

Don't worry about the resolution of the content. It's more about the size of your display. There are two methods for calculating seating distance.

One is concerned with calculating the correct physical distance you need to sit in order to discerne the full resolution of your display (assuming 20/20 vision). The other is based on your viewing angle in order to have the correct proportion of your field of vision occupied by the display for an immersive cinematic experience.

Here are two easy to use online tools for either method:

actually Ken if you look at the applet that you link in that second link the viewing distance changes if you leave in the same size of display but click on another resolution - so resolution does play a major role in the distances - its not fixed for a size at every resolution - to test this out instead of leaving the distance in the app change that to as an example a 50" TV size and then click on the different resolutions and it will show you different distances to be sitting at for that one size of TV at each resolution  ;)

Yes, but it's the resolution of the display, not of the content. Sorry, perhaps I should have stated that more clearly.

But sir ..... one can argue that the resolution of the display is not a constant - the resolution of DVD is different from full HD blu-ray which is still very different from our regular TV playback - so it changes according to the content (no matter how good or otherwise the internal scalers of the display are)  ;)

or thats how i see it - but either way i am still in favor of sitting as close as you possibly can so im just arguing the semantics - but rest assured i agree in essence with you even if im not 100% in agreement wiht every detail

What you're saying makes logical sense on the face of it but, as you allude to, everything displayed on a flat panel is scaled to the panel's native resolution.

When scaling SD content, new pixels are created to fill in the gaps in resolution, so even though they may not be as well defined as the HD content, a half decent scaler should render them just as watchable. In fact I think upscaled DVDs look better than the typical low bitrate HD content of satellite.

The point of judging distance by panel resolution is not only that you don't sit too far away from the panel (missing out on all the resolution it has to offer) but also because sitting too close will make it's pixel structure visible which you also do not want. It's not about viewing TV at a distance defined by it's content's native resolution. Even if it began life as a 576i transmission, it is displayed as a 1080p image. Also remember much of what you watch on the HD channels is also just upscaled SD content from the broadcaster's side.

okay on the resolution issue - maybe it all looks a lot better where you are because of the broadcast quality - but here in SA that argument will fall flat when you see how bad SD content still looks no matter how good the scaler is on your TV ..... i say this cos im partially spoiled by having access to lots of HD content - trust me upscaling is nowhere near good enough to be considered the resolution it is supposed to mimic ...... but either way i will concede the point and leave it as that or we will be arguing forever  ;)

now onto other progress on my side ..... i posted pics of my bedroom/PC setup earlier on - so the HTIB i had was half wasted cos i wasnt using the speakers from that - so i decided to sell it and invest the proceeds in a more functional receiver - upshot was i landed up a pioneer VSX819

unboxing the receiver

the receiver - apologies for all the cellphone pics

receiver and sub connected - im using the AR sub from my AR lounge setup here - it works terrific in this application

heres a quick peek at what the setup now looks like - dont worry about the mess of wires - this was just a quick throwing together of everything just to see if it works - now im going to work on getting a new sub for the lounge and then im going to begin the rack + speaker stands for the bedroom because i will be using those wall mounts for the rears - i now have 3 pairs of those JVC speakers - so all-in-all enough for 5.1 audio
