That's interesting Ghost.
Web searches for it only got me two SA-based music producers who claim it as part of their setup (pointless, since it has no impact on sound).
But no international mention of it.

Steerpike, if only we got in touch a few years earlier I could have sent you a unit or two as I had a bunch of the stuff.

It seems to be locally made by Audio Geometry (probably under license from Revox). Very simple circuit that worked in conjunction with the Revox/Studer phono stage that was mounted in the trolly frame that held the SP-10 turntable.

The line out from the phono stage connected to a signal loop on the control interface for pre-monitoring and TX control (interface controlled mute relays in the phono stage as well). The SP-10  got connected to the interface via a small "D" connector that hooked up on the motor's "remote control" jack. Internally the Sp-10 were slightly modified to allow the control from a "foreign" source. If I remember correctly the phono stage also gto connected to the control interface via a small D patch cable to allow powering and evidently control of the phono stage mute circuit.

Their selection of pushbuttons is quite gaudy! It doesn't have the austere style of other Studer broadcast equipment.

(I'm still working on my SP10 - that's kinda taking prority because so many people want to see the results. But the SABC mark-3 TT is going to get attention too now that I've got my mind in 'motor control' mode again.)

Does anyone remember the Radio 5 studio they had at Milner Park during the Rand Show?

Steer

I might be able to hook yo up with somebody that knows a few "professionals"... that might have some more info on the SABC mkIII. Drop me an e-mail and lets take it from there.

On the topic of broadcast t/ts. Ever seen one of those Russco mkV machines? I have a LP here of radio 702 (Hits of 85) where you can see one in a shot, of one of the DJs (Alex Jay), on the back cover.

See pic - found this on the net.

Seems like a super sleek idler-drive machine.

I didn't know "Channel 702" used Russcos; the only time I was there I only saw an SP10, which was around.. umm... a bit before they moved from the bottom end of JHB central and about the time they went stereo for an instant.

I've put photos of the SABC TT speed control panel here:

(Ghost, got your email CC, thanks for doing the enquirey.)

I'll try and scan the shot on the 702 cover of the Russco machine.

Are those "lights" on the control panel touch switches? I guess you can make a sleek control panel for the machine to suite its function (33, 45 & 78). Seems like its a heavy duty spinner.

Lights and switches all in one! Strangely, they are not commercial illuminated push switches (like Rafi or Saia-Burgess etc.) just mounted on a panel. Rather the panel has been milled to be an intergal part of the switch. They have an extremely short switch travel - less that 1mm to 'click' them.
I had thought of buying illuminated pushbuttons from RS, but the nice ones are very costly - and still not a perfect match. I think I'll just buy the coloured lens caps and clone the rest from assorted plastic & aluminium.

Well MAYBE... as a 'bonus'. But for reasons that are not logical, I want it to look and respond as it was originally designed. In princple, for home use, the control panel is totally pointless. I just want to be able to sit in my study and say with AUTHORITY:"You are tuned to the national network of Sprinkbok radio. At the next stroke of the gong the time will be exactly one o'clock."  ;D

Cool man! Respect!

Wonder where you can get a list of the DJs and staff that used to work for Springbok. Maybe a former DJ can tell you what "those" buttons did.

Get hold of someone like David Gresham perhaps?
