Data Execution Prevention errors
« on: June 09, 2009, 04:00:33 pm »
AAnyone else getting these warnings? Upgraded to IE 8, and I am having a terrible time browsing this forum all of a sardine. I keep getting told that some malicious/damaging prog is trying to do something to my PC, and therefore the page is being closed.

Here is message:

Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer

A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage.

Are you running Windows Vista? Just curious. I haven't used IE8 much, I have it but it hasn't really impressed me enough to use it for anything other than the odd internal site which requires it.

Hmmm, you "downgraded" to IE8!

There are many recommended remedies for this issue, but possibly you may have to do a complete reinstall of the operating system(Backup and do a fresh installation) to solve this problem.

If reloading is not the appropriate answer at the moment, you could possibly try Firefox with IE extentions until you have the opportunity to reload. I will have a further look tomorrow, but if you could perhaps capture the complete error message by doing a screen capture(alt-PrtScn) and paste that into Wordpad or something, it will help a lot looking for a solution.

Andrew, why don't you rather upgrade to the award-winning  Mozilla Firefox browser instead? Much safer, more reliable, and quicker browsing. Very well supported too!

But fools seldom....... :D

I am in THAT industry as are so many of our members and at work we had a number of similiar problems after being hit by the Conficker virus. However the error message in those cases referred to Rundll32 that was causing the problem, where from the info supplied by Andrew thus far it seems that IE itself is the cause.

But as I said, if he can supply some more information, I am sure we will be able to point him the right direction ;)

Hi

I couldn't log in at all, last night. Last time I looked, I was still using IE7 as I've learned my lesson long ago to only accept so-called updates/ugrades with the greatest circumspicion. Google "Chrome" was offered for a couple of weeks and I tried to download but it was never installed as far as I know, because it wouldn't. Other strange things happened here too with Picasa3. Some of my pics started turning themselves upside down but the problem has gone away by itself.

I have security measures and paid for antivir stuff but this blikbrain has become incredibly slow and is due for an update/upgrade soon, but not to Vista. I can here my bro's curses all the way here from Hopefield...

Windows 7? I am not joking as thus far it seems to be a huge improvement on Vista, but time will tell

He, he, he! Just installed Chrome as well and as you say there are no issues accessing the Avforums website. I played around with it while still in Beta and was quite impressed with it, but then got sidetracked with other things and forgot all about it ;D

I've been trying IE8 today against the forum and haven't encountered any issues yet. Running Windows 7 RC 64-bit (but 32-bit Internet Explorer). Some types of programming errors will show up as DEP warnings.

Sounds like a trojan to me. If you do have a trojan/worm then,
-I'd suggest to do the follwing:
1. Stop System Restore
2. Download smitfraudfix, spybot, malwarebytes and CCleaner and have your antivirus
3. ReBoot into safe mode - Press F8 on startup and select Safe Mode (WinXP)
4. Run Smitfraudfix and update to latest signatures, then do the Scan and Clean - option 2
5. Now install CCleaner and do a clean of all temp internet files
6. Then install malwarebytes and upate and scan
7. Then do the same for spybot.
8. Then finally scan with you antivirus scanner
9. Once all the above comes back clear - Reboot Windows as normally
10. If the trojan exploits a Windows security hole, then the above might not clean it, and this would mean a complete re-install!!

Goodluck

IE8 is forced down via Windows update, but I have not had it come down on my PCs at home. I blocked IE7 & IE8 with a blocking programs, because as Abe and Family Dog, I'm a Firefox fan. Been using Firefox for 5 years and had no issues, except maybe the odd extension causing hassles.
I have also tried Google Chrome, but its not there yet.

@ludo -it is an option. preferably Ubuntu. Although I have been using OpenSuse/SLES very successfully for many configurations. PC-BSD is also very good and getting better all the time. With its ports way of install.

-the problem I have with linux is 3D native gaming support. I don't want 2 run loads of memory sapping applications, to achieve what I can on Winxp!!

*sorry for the hi-jack*

Nope, Windows XP home edition, service pack 3. It only started when I downloaded the blasted 'update' Tried the beta a few months ago and thought it was awful, but as someone else pointed out, it's kinda been forced on us as an update. So far the error message has only popped up here, and I'm on two other forums, too. It doesn't appear on the page that shows all the various forums, only comes up when I browse inside a foum, or if I'm trying to send a reply. Like now, it's sitting on my screen, same error message:

Data Execution Prevention - Mircosoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

So long as I don't click on the 'Close Message' button, I can continue surfing. It's more of an irritation, really. But yes, must rather just switch across to Firefox, which I have installed here.
