You'll have to nag Joel for his opinion, as he ran the test. I have to say that I found the picture quality so close on the bits where I came in, that I couldn't pick up much difference. But I did pick up an immediate difference in the audio quality.

Joel?

On a 40 -inch Sony LCD and at normal viewing distence, there was little to choose on the video side.

I could see some differences when close to the TV. Ws a little more detail and depth to on screen images.

More differences would probably have been visible with a larger screen.

as Andrew has said Audio quality from BD was better, but would those with a less revealing system notice?

Conclusion: Good scaling canget close to BD and I for one wouldnt go out just yet and buy into BD. Unless I won the lotto and could put in a decent projector.

On the Audio Side I dont really like music DVD's too much so can live without the enhanced audio that these may offer. besides I still play vinyl.

Hi Joel,

I rust read your review this morning on the Toshiba DVD player in the last issue of AVSA and it seems like a good deal. Would your comment above still hold true for the Toshiba player? I'm not sure which DVD player you used in comparison to the BD player. I'm also more keen on video quality as opposed to audio quality. As you, I don't listen to audio on DVD audio disks (or CD's on my DVD player for that matter).

Another thing, if you can remember off the top of your head. Does that Toshiba player upscale on the component outputs? My RPTV does not have HDMI, only component and can display up to 1080i on that (apparently).

Thanks!

Gert

 8)

Thanx for that info Joel. My sentiments exactly. IMHO "multi-channel" music cannot always hold a candle to stereo music for listening!! I have a few Music DVDs, that I listen to, but this is not for the audio quality, but more for the enjoyment of the video. I normally, just play it in 5.1 channel mode, unless some matrixed mode sounds better.

Gert the comments were based on using the Toshiba. For the money it does scale well.
Not too sure about scaling on component, so I'll call the distributors and find out.
