[w] your old camera!
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:36:08 pm »
Hi all,

I am looking for a decent little camera for around R1000 or less. I presume someone here has upgraded at some stage and has one lying about at home that they'd consider parting ways with. If so, please let me know.

Thx,
Ryan

Is that a rhetorical question...? ;)

LOL, any digital camera, perferable a point n click! I do lean towards Canon or Fuji (believe it or not) camera's in this range. However, I'd be willing to check out all options of course!

hehe ... reason I ask is that for a R1,000.00 you'll get a pretty decent used camera : the drop in value so fast :/ I saw a nice 6MP Cybershot selling at under R1,0000.00 the other day when the guy bought it at over R4,000.00 not along ago.

You can even get point and shoots new at R1,000.00

I have a Canon point and shoot A410 that's worth half that amount and a Fuji S3000 worth only a little more. Both are pretty decent cameras (the Fuji is better though), but I think I'd be insulting you by offering those ;)

Why not buy new?

Yep, I am hoping that somewhere someone has bought a great camera only to have then upgraded to a DSLR or something even better and would like to sell the old one.

LOL, nope, not insulting, but they both lack the pixel count I'd need. I am looking at new models as well, but I am hoping that while I shop around something might pop up here that's amazing! I found a Canon A620 on gumtree for R1500 that I'm quite tempted to get...

I know this is not a camera site, but why in heavens name do you want more than 6Mp on a P&S? The more Mp in general means more noise on the sensor, as the sensors are really tiny, so you end up not being able to use the extra pixels in any case - as they look crappy when zoomed in, except to fill up empty hdd's? BTW 6Mp photographed well prints A3, 10Mp's photographed badly gets you to postcard size... Even the best 10MP mik&druk's don't look that hot at 100% viewing, so really, get one which has a good lens and the features you need.
OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...

Indeed, I am not looking for double digits here at all. The two camera's offered are both 3MP variants. My computer monitor alone is 4Mp (2560 x 1600) so I get alot more out of a better photo then most...

My current options are:
  • Canon Powershot A590IS (new for around R1800-R2000) - 8mp, 4x Optical Zoom, Image stabilizer, DIGIC III processor, and manual controls
  • Canon Powershot A620 (second hand for R1500) - 7mp, 4x Optiocal Zoom, DIGIC II processor and even more manual controls, better software bundled with it. New it's around R4000.

So I'm leaning towards the A620 at the moment.

I have had 2 Sony's before, once a Cybershot T7 which was awesome for 3 years and then started playing up, it was later pickpocketted in Spain. Then I bought a T200 which looked amazing and had great promise but the pics couldn't compare with the cheapie Canon's and it started playing up as well. Son'y wouldn't warrant the international guarantee for some reason (I bought it in a duty free shop in Gilbraltar). For this I really want to stay away from Sony's.

Hold it! Hold it!!!!!! (in the words of Fred Flintstone!)

You can get a SAMSUNG S1060 for around R1700. Its got a 10.2 Mega Pixel sensor and takes awesome photos! Very easy to use and features a host of 'professional' functions.

Here is some photographic proof:

LOL GiTM...

It's too late, I bought the Canon A620 last night, I haven't really had a chance to fiddle yet but from what I've read online this is a pretty awesome camera!

Nice pic BTW, dam that's sweet! I love Macro photo's and look for lots of opportunity to take them!

The Canon A's are really sweet. It sometimes seem they don't fall prey to the marketers nonsense with 10x zoom and 14 Mp on a 3mm sensor...
If you wanna really do macro with a compact...
http://raynox.co.jp/english/digital/egdigital.html
dunno ifit'll fit the 620, but some of their units have a two sizes fits all adaptor, the Canon job would be great at a bit more though.

Cool, hopefully sometime in the future I have a bit more cash and then I'd love to get a good macro lense. The 620 is awesome as it does take a wide variety of lenses, most of the reviews I read quite liked that.

Now i need to find a good crash course in photography because I don;t know nearly as much as I'd like too...

Dunno about CPT, but http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/forum/ has plenny of info, and there'll be some info on CPT... I did a R250 rand morning course, which just got me enough info to get started with exploring the camera and what affects what. It was just that little thing to understand the basics, so you could read and understand the other stuff...

P.S. if you can't find a course google wikipedia photography and any of the following: macro, composition, exposure, digital iso, flash, post processing...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_(photography)
