Interest?
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:43:01 am »
Why are there more petrol-heads contributing to AVforumsSA than vacuum heads (er - ooops; sorry!)? Are Ghostinthemachine and myself the only ones keeping the vacuums up and filaments burning?

And, by the way, D ... that awful 17-letter username of yours that nobody can remember for long enough to write it. Can I suggest that you shorten it to perhaps Ghostinmac? Sounds much more poetic and sexy (Scottish as well - as in Whisky)!  ;D ;D :D

Maybe it is because there is so little smoke in these tubes that people are wary of their function...after all all electronics run on smoke :D

Hey Martin, remember that the tubes contain the smoke better as they have a vacuum - lol!
But be weary of "the white shine of death" or "great balls of fire" inside a tube. Lol!

At some stage I was interested out of curiousity, but since then I have heard some Valve pre-amps and power amps in direct comparison to me own pre-amp and power amps(switch-mode both ;D ), but I could not hear enough of a difference to warrant the expense.

I am not saying that Valve jobs don't sound good, they do, but just not so good that I would aspire to get into the Valve game ;) The only real attraction they still have to me is the lovely retro look glowing in the night.

Well I'm Interrested. I gave some tubes to FD some time ago, and if I look at the pics you guys post I sometimes wonder what I was thinking.  ;D
But I would have probably never gat as far as doing something with them.  :-\

But keep it up, I read and enjoy, I just can't contribute.  :-[

I've never owned any valve gear... thankfully... Hehe. Not because I don't like them, but I just don't have space for yet another passion. I'm trying hard to cut down...

I have a tube amp, and I enjoy it, but don't know enough to comment too much. So, I visit this threads to learn some more about them.

I love the sound of tubes. but I'm also not a fanatic, and believe that more important than the technology itself is a proper implementation. by that I mean, if you do an average job with tubes, it will sound worse than a good job with transistors. in general I find tube gear to sound very organic, and that's what I really like.
btw, I also own a tube amp, as well as a tube pre-amp (which is currently in my r&d department)... ;)

I just don't get it....

Solid-state is FLAT and SMALL (sounding) - Why, other than for difficult driver loads, would ANYONE (especially if you've heard valves) want solid-state amplification?
