Got cans? Yes sir

I went to buy some replacement in-ear phones for my ridiculed iPod   and saw the sennheisers for about R259.00. The salesman lead me to their special of the day - Sennheiser HD 202 for R199.00, so I naturally snapped them up. Good buy or not?? To me they have opened up a whole new take on audio. absolutely stunning detail and accuracy.

I had a pair of these, bought them two years ago for R250, listened to them for 6 months (and only to them). After six months of happy listenings, I sold them to a friens for R180 and got me a set HD515's. The difference was amazing, except that I sometimes miss the isolation of the HD202's, they can almost double as ear-protection. Anyway, I think normal retail on them(HD202) is over R300 nowadays.

Yup, though I've read some reviews it was a bit of a downgrade from the HD-201. No idea really, I've never heard them myself. I love the isolation of the 201's, and the quality is very very decent. They sound sweet with off girlfriend's Mk5 iPod but I'm not too sure if the Nano can drive them with authority. Time for a Headroom Micro Amp methinks ;)

It is very importantwith some headphones to have a 150Ohm output impedance. THis can easily be achieved with a little adapter with little resistors inside (they don't need to dissipate much).

Many of the newer generation cans are designed around the old radio standard with portable players in mind, but almost all really good cans are still 150  Ohm becasue that is how they get used professionally.

I would go with an Altoids tin type amp for portable use. One can pick some up for reasonable prices on e-bay.

I drive my Beyerdynamic DT-880 (which need their first service sometime) with a Yamaha MG 10/2 mixer which is quite adequate.

I've been using the 202's for a while now and most recently with Foobar + Dolby headphone and I amd VERY happy. My laptop however isn't really the greatest of HP amps. Could I have a few suggestions and if poss. RRP's of a few good HP amps from you can junkies :D

Altoids Mint Tin Can Amp are very popular, alternatively a mixer with a headphone output or a dedicated unit. HD202 is driven well by most sources.

DIY, plans available on the net. 9V battery powered op-amp amplifier in a compact case that allows you to use more demanding (ito battery life) headphones with portable players as an added bonus.

I just use my Yammy Mixer.
