« on: November 16, 2008, 11:15:11 pm »
Could i have some background on the mag:

1) When was it formed
2) By whom
3) Was AVSA in any way related to Multi Media magazine
4) Some background on the reviewers would be nice (ie qualifications, how they got into sound etc)

Thanks

Great Mag

1: 1988

2: Dont remember earliest days but Bob Pryers and Deon Schoeman have owned the mag for most of its life.

3: No

4: Have diplomas in Project management and journalism. started getting into better audio at the age of 12 (still remember catching a bus into JHB and buying my NAD 3020 from Hi-Fi Installations in Fox street), have imported high end car audio products (USD Audio), sold some great local amplifiers (Bass Audio) and written for numerous publications.

Eventually decided that playing with toys and being paid for it was a good way to make a living. Been with the mag since 2000.

Most importantly I believe that it's all about the music.

To bring it back on topic, Ockie, I have a background in PR and journalism, but I don't do equipment reviews - that is the domain of Deon, Joel, William and newcomers like Justin and Brian.

And of course we're enormously lucky to have the likes of Johan Potgieter writing for us, and he has a very impressive resume (But you have to coax it all out of him, as he doesn't like to boast!)

I was just trying to get around what it takes to do a job like that.

thanks again

Being able to understand what you are hearing, why it sounds like that and writing clearly, yet tactfully, would prolly be the most important part...

I think you have to have a passion for certain elements to make it work. Both Deon and Joel have nice home theatre set ups from what I have heard, yet both at the same time have a very real love for stereo-only set-ups and vinyl. Brian who does the cameras is a very accomplished photographer with a book of his work that has been published, newcomer Justin has an eye for the newer types of technology, and so forth.

Related to this question...

When did Deon do his weekly (?) stint with Rafe Levine (?) on Radio 5, as it was then known. I seem to recall it was every Monday evening at 7PM. I used to enjoy that! :)
