i removed them on my 17 but did not hear an improvement so put them back.

I found the same on a Rotel RCD-855, but did not put back the transistors. The CDP did not even make funny sounds with these out of circuit.

You should remove the DC blocking caps, if you have no DC on amps...

Provided your pre amp is AC coupled or shuts down/mutes with DC on its inputs or you at least know how your rig will handle a spontanious 15V DC from the CD player outputs. If the circuit was designed with caps I feel you may take a bit of a chance. Just use better caps.
Again, a lot of players may not have DC offset when operating but their power up cycle may be less clean.
