Adding pictures to your posts
« on: May 24, 2012, 03:39:48 PM »
I’ve noticed that a lot of users, especially in the Classifieds section, do not know, or struggle to show images in their threads or posts, so I have decided that since I cannot be of assistance with anything AV related, I could at least assist with this!

Please note that I do not have any affiliation to www.uploads.co.za/[/url]

Mod edit:www.uploads.co.za is no more, use http://postimage.org/ http://photobucket.com/ or http://imageshack.us/

, but it is the easiest site I have found to upload images, and you don’t need to even register or login, which makes it perfect. Also, even though websites like photobucket are blocked here at work, this site is not.

Step 1:

On the website, there is a 2mb limit on files, so make sure if you are using a high res image that you resize it. If you know that your image is smaller than 2Mb, then just skip to Step 2

If you have Microsoft Office 2010 or newer you can easily resize your images using the Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Just right click on your image in the folder where it is stored, go to Open with (not Open), and choose Microsoft Office Picture Manager:

Step 2:

Click on Browse (marked in green in the image above), navigate to the location where the image you want to upload (the compressed image if the original is more than 2Mb) is stored, select it and click Open

Then select Start Uploading

Once uploaded, you will see a page like this:

Ok, now select the URL next to Direct (if you click once on that url, it will select the whole URL), make sure the whole url is selected, then right click on the selected text and click Copy

Step 3:

Now the easy part :-D
Go to the forum, and in your post or new thread, click the image button (see red arrow)

and in the post window you will see the image tags (img and /img in square brackets). Now paste your url from the uploads website immediately after the first set of square brackets

And there you have it, your image is posted!!

I suggest that when copying the link from "uploads.co.za" as they present the options to you, rather use "thumbnail for forums".
That way the post gets a small picture embedded in it, which can be clicked to reveal the large one.
Otherwise, you get a post containing a large picture which often messes up the layout of the thread display, and can really slow down the whole thread-reading process for people on slower internet connections.

Also be aware that you cannot edit  images on uploads.co.za. Once they are there, you lose control of them.

I also still have troubles. I re-activated my photobucket account yesterday and uploaded some pics but this is where I'm stuck. What comes next?

Thanks

Set the Photobucket album for "Public" viewing, select the pic you want, scroll down to the "[img ]yourpic.jpg[/img ] tags, it should copy to your clip board and then paste the selected tags in the body of your message.  Viola!

very helpful thank you. Would it work if I inserted a file path on my local machine instead of a URL?

In some browsers, I use Chrome, you can right click on a web pic and chose "Copy image URL".
Then simply click the pictures icon as indicated above and paste in the middle. Done. Too easy actually.  :)
