Reasons for buying AVSA
« on: July 04, 2008, 11:01:09 am »
Obviously I'm biased but there are a few good reasons for buying Audio Video South Africa.

1: It's local and this means all products reviewed are (should be) available here, and local pricing is listed.
2: Products are reviewed under local conditions.(not in some unknown room in the US or UK)
3: AVSA Supports the A/V industry.
4: AVSA Always has news on new equipment.
5: What other mag participates in online forums like this one.
6: You can speak to reviewers.
7: We have Andrew as a Moderator ;D
8: You can have your system featured in the mag (as soon as i get my behind into gear)
9: Despite the biggest segment of the market being HT, AVSA always has a stereo section.
10: AVSA has CD, DVD, and Vinyl reviews.
11: AVSA has competitions
12: AVSA has William and he gives the Vinyl boys something to moan about :)

Oooh, someone is pushing for that assistant editor job ;D

In a nutshell, I like AVSA for all the reasons Joel outlined above. There are certain things I don't like, but then you cannot please everybody ;)

Reasons for buying AVSA

Some of the staff are petrolheads.
Joel has a cool hairstyle. (and a baby soon) best wishes on this one  ;)
William is ignorant and Deon and Joel aren't.
Jamster likes Loui's Subaru.
Andrew gets paid too little (which means the cover price is good) :D :D

Andrew you know these vinyl guys, they see(hear) things that aren't there ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I do however agree with Joel's reasons for buying AVSA and if someone does not like the magazine, so be it, you can't satisfy everyone all the time ;)

Ok here's the thing....

I buy both What?HiFi and AVSA. Some comments.

1) What?HiFi lists prices at every corner, at every review, at every comparison etc. I know that not all of the products are available in SA, but comparatively it's still a nice-to-have. AVSA (imho) lacks this. Sure they have them at the proper reviews, but I'd like to see more prices in there.

2) WHF do comparative testings across a wide range - standmounts, floorstands, receivers, even HTiB! This always makes for interesting reading.

3) The buyer's guide at the end fascinates me to no end. It has all the information right there, comparable... voila! (... sort of like a "reality check", if you will... :D )

enough of WHF now, because AVSA has the following:

4) Strong reviews. Strong like bull. In-depth, detailed, and clear. I would like another review or two in there (I'm a greedy pig, what can I say), but keep it up.

5) They review (or at least mention) many products before others. The June AVSA issue, had a write-up on the NAD Viso FIVE (wantwantwantwantwantwant), as well as the Spendor SA1's, whereas it's only appearing in the July issue of WHF. I also think that AVSA is more relevant to the local market, as all products are actually available here.

6) What more than 4) and 5) do you really want in an AV mag? :P

It's not the size of the sub, it's where you place it.

But the editorial is based on the UK pricing meaning that different mark up structures on different brands through different local distributors can completely skew the value ratings

1: It's local and this means all products reviewed are (should be) available here, and local pricing is listed.

If I want to know what something costs, I call my dealer, so I don't get "estimated" prices, yeah, I know what a "Recommended Retail Price is, and what it is worth ), and if there are no local dealers, buying direct from the manufacturer, has proven to be faster, cheaper, and an all round better experience ...

2: Products are reviewed under local conditions.(not in some unknown room in the US or UK)

What is the difference between an unknown room ih the UK and an equally unknown room is SA?

3: AVSA Supports the A/V industry.

A/V industry ... , I suppose the advertising is worth the effort ...

A/V is for people with a vacuum between their ears ... [biased ... ? YES]

4: AVSA Always has news on new equipment.

I wonder what other mags publish ... , news from the beginning of the millennium?

5: What other mag participates in online forums like this one.

I know a number of hi-fi rags that operate their own forums and BLOGS (YUCK)

6: You can speak to reviewers.

Really, you wanna tell me you don't know what a telephone is, nor a cellphone, nor e-mail, as you obviously have internet access, to partake in this forum ... , I know you live in Africa, but please ... , or is just too much bloody effort to communicate with someone, who you cannot drive to his/her home and talk to, over a cup of coffee or whatever ...???

7: We have Andrew as a Moderator ;D

Really, really, wonderfully, unique ...

8: You can have your system featured in the mag (as soon as i get my behind into gear)

And have half the continent writing/phoning/e-mailing or wanna visit, not bloody likely ...

10: AVSA has CD, DVD, and Vinyl reviews.
11: AVSA has competitions
12: AVSA has William and he gives the Vinyl boys something to moan about :)

And that all make AVSA unique in the world ... , and still not worth the cover price ... ::) :o

Jeez, Java... do you ever buy any magazines? What more do you want?

I buy AVSA because I have been a subscriber for more years than I care to remember... must be mid-eighties or somewhere around there. It is bright, interesting, and the reviews of hardware as well as software make for interesting reading.

Now, if you really want to see me sulk, just mention the words "TV" and "Soapies, News, Bla-bla..."

Yes I do, but only on occasion, that there is content that is of interest to myself, but magazines off late, contain too many "promotional" articles, which at first glance appear to be "reviews" and an over abundance of colorful, meaning less adverts, and the genuine reviews are piss poor, on the one hand the jorno who writes then may want to express his genuine opinion, but the fear of offending those who "submit" gear for review shines thru - a non-committal review is worthless to the reader, the magazine and those who submit gear to be reviewed ... , a total waste of every bodies time money and effort ...

Last magazine I bought was 2 weeks ago, an imported journal, for the measly sum of R155-00 ... , it was and still is educational, and informative ...

What a stunner, ROFLMAO    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
My thought.......can one jerk really cause a great publication to close their doors  ???

On the point number 1. I created, what are you doing on this forum then ?

No.2 I quite like the idea and if you hung out here long enough you would appreciate the interactiveness with their readers.

No.3 Not likely, surely not from my side  :P

No.4 If 20 odd rand is that much worth to you, then times must be tough, now I will take you a bet that you have no problem pissing it out elsewhere.
