DIY Systems at Fest
« on: February 25, 2006, 10:44:27 pm »
With all the preparation for DIYFest there has been very little on the radar on the forum (or the registrar, common guys, even if you intend to pay at the gate, do register) so I am starting this thread to discuss systems that might possibly be in attendance.

Hennie and I are teaming up for some enclosure action and will present anything we are happy enough to be presentable. Currently on the cards:

¾” or 1” Tweeter (either scan or seas)
4” Midrange (of shootout pedigree)
7”-ish Bass-Mid (yet to be finalized)

Possible other items include Sonus Faber Grand Piano (slightly tweaked) and Tannoy 15” Dual concentrics (in possibly unfinished oak enclosures)

Good idea.

I am pushing hard to get my project done so I can bring the speakers to the fest.  I doubt that the crossovers will be ready, but Timber has provisionally agreed to run them using some of his active corssover equipment.  If all else fails, I will at least bring them along so everyone can have look at it.

My cabs are:  2 way Seas excel floorstanders in Maple.

If you have anything at all to bring, please do so.  The whole point of a DIY fest is to take a look at each others' projects, and to discuss them with each other.  The point is not have other people criticize your project and make you feel bad.

Everyone needs to start somewhere, and even if you are bringing your first DIY project, it will still be welcomed by everyone I am sure.  The more people who bring projects, the more we have to look at and talk about on the day.

Cheers,
Ian.

Ian, not only your project, but anyone who is prepared to give me the time (other than the basic setup on the actual day) to allow me the setup can have a fairly decent shot at an active crossover (even tri-amping if needed, ,arrange beforehand if you really need quad-amping and beyond). I am considdering a 4" + piezo midrange section that will come in at about R60 driver cost to make a showcase of the frugalphile method of hi-fi. I am not promising anything about that one though, but I for one feel a bit more supportive of those who get good results with innovative and cost-effective means and not just throw lots of $$$ at a system and have it coming away as expected.

@ Alex: that little one looks very interresting. Is that the 19mm alu dome?

How about this. We vote for the best budget system. The winner may cast the deciding vote on our mix-em-up event at the end where welll bash together a quick baffle and put the favorite components of the day into good use.

Be warned, I might just decide to sneak in some infinity dynamic action. You never know....

If we are going to be voting for the best budget system, then mine is definitely out of the equation.

Two questions:  What do you consider a budget system, and how many of these systems will be on show.  There is no point voting if we only have one or two budget systems...

Cheers,
Ian.

That sounds very interesting.

Do tell more? :) (Perhaps in a separate thread?)

Well, a cheap 4" car driver with whizzerectomy and a piezo tweeter (with suitable modifications). What more needs to be said? Oh yeah, this woud be a bose Killer (their driver cost is probably about a third of this though)

I have too many ideas that I am toying with for Fest. This would only be entertained after I am done with the cabs so it may well not make it that far.

Well here goes ... AlexD asked me to post a pic of what my project is that I am bringing along to the DIY Fest. It seems that Seas is the woofer of choice. Scan Speak tweeter. I have been working on these for the past 3 years. I hope to have them complete and ready by the 1st.   It should be a great DIY Fest... :D

Interesting tweeter configuration. We'll see whether the symmetrical baffle for it has any peculiarities. Where and how do you cross these?

These are crossing at 2.5 khz and at about a 6 db slope. The minimized area around the drivers ensure an excellent soundstage. I have not picked up any peculiarities, but my design is not yet finished.

Very interresting. Perhaps see whether you want to come the weekend before for the tweak session. I will possibly have some felt on hand. My only concern is the symetrical diffraction off the tweeter baffle and I'd guess a round-over and/or some damping migth do it good, but with these things the proof is in the listening and the low filter slope might do the configuration good in other aspects.

You're a brave man to use a such an expensive tweeter with a first order filter. Henie and I will try to see how low we can go with our Seas 27TDFC/TV, the opposite approach so the DIYfest is turning out to be very varied. I cannot wait to listen to all the projects.

I have been through many crossover types and slopes, just before I went back to this one, I had an 18db butterworth crossover in there. I prefer this one, it is more revealing and transparent.

One of Nick's friends also runs a Morel tweeter with a first order x-o iirc, so it'll be very interresting so hear the different tweeter options and alignments. Perhaps try an active first order and a notch an octave into the stopband?

Looking interesting Gav. Love small deep cabinets.

Are you notching for the 4.5k resonance in the woofer?
