« on: May 31, 2008, 11:26:04 am »
I have the option between a samsung ps50q9 and a pannie th50pv70m.  I have no idea what the models names is in SA. I can't find much info on these on the net.

Does anyone else know about these? which one would you go for? Would love 24p , but doubt ill get that in this price range.

Any comments on the hitachi 50" full hd plasmas?

Ive allready looked at both. The Samsung seems to be the one to go for Nice black levels. The panny doesn't seem to bad. its a little bit cheaper. I suppose i should just toss a coin. :) unf both are only 720p so you don't get 24p.

Nope. Sorry. LG wasn't on my list.

Bought a cheapy sony 32" lcd. Love the 24 p though. ;)

None of them came close to my ex SXRD, and seeing as we don't get them here, I gave it a pass. will wait for newer tech to become more available. And when I return ill get a decent TV. :)

Let us know what you decide to go for and why. :)

I was looking at a Samsung 42" vs Sony 50" at Cats Digital recently and initially thought the Sony had no change against the Samsung, specifically ito contrast. The Samsung was just that much more vivid with pitch black blacks and crisp colours where the Sony had dark grey blacks and more wasehed out colours. Untill I started to look carefully, and herin my warning. The Samsung looses almost all definition in darker areas. Anything in the shade of a tree for example is black - only. On the Sony you can actually see what's in the shade, not on the Samsung.

It could be a matter of dropping the contrast on the Samsung, fair enough, BUT just make sure that you are not fooled by black blacks like I was...

From some limited comparative viewing, the one plasma that struck me as having really incredible picture quality - in terms of natural colour hues and excellent blacks - was the Pioneer PDP-LX508D 50" Full-HD (1920x1080).  A mate in the UK has one of these and the picture quality absolutely blew me away.   :o :o

The only challenge being the fact that it is not exactly a cheap display.   :'( :'(

We watched one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series and some of the below deck scenes were the best I've ever seen in rendering degrees of darkness with good textural resolution in poorly-lit scenes.   :o :o

Just a quick note - Hitachi is now available in SA through Balanced Audio and if you've read reviews on these and the Yamaha displays (which are just rebadged Hitachi's) you might want to give them a demo as well. Any reason you not considering LCD ?

So you rate the Hitachis? Ive seen a few of them , but never bothered.

Plasma instead of LCD. Mainly cause of the response time during gaming. You also don't get backlight "problems" with a plasma.

Saw the new range of samsung 50" plasma yesterday. Great features. 24p, 100hz motionflow. okay only 720p, but thats fine. coming in cheaper than the one it replaces. Worth a look. The model over here is : PS50A450. The A550 is full hd. and around 4 k more over here.
