Where to buy dies
« on: February 03, 2012, 04:07:11 pm »
I'm looking for an M12/1.5 hex nut die but can't find anything reasonably priced.

Best quote I got was for a FEW for 4 gorillas which is PRICEY for a once off use.

I have a 12 x 1.75 - but that's not going work.   :(

Have you tried Fowkes Bros or Bolt & Nut Centre in P. Eiland.

I'll check with the wholesalers, we buy tools from, on Monday, and see what's available.

Also try Topfast in paarden eiland, or Power Tool Repairs on Roodebloem Rd woodstock... phone 'em before you go all the way.

They prob not cheaper than Builders Whorehouse, but at least they won't be sharty quality.

M12 X 1.5 isnt standard so I suspect thats why its expensive. For single use I'd go to cash crusaders, my lockal one had a tap and die set for R75 .

The 12x1.75 is the standard thread for that size right? I'm actually not sure what it's supposed to be. A friend of mine in JHB made me a ali gearknob for my car but can't remember what thread he cut. I would assume it's standard though so maybe 12x1.75 will work.

The problem I have is the stick is too long now so I need to cut the screw lower down then chop about 40mm off it's length.

I did try a friends cheapo Chinese set but it's carbon steel not HSS and didn't cut very well. That and I felt like it was going to break in my hands.

Thanks for the response guys.

Borrow mine and give it a try.  I'm in CT.

Just bear in mind that a die nut is usually for cleaning existing threads.  To cut a new thread, a split die in the proper holder is best.

But, if you a just extending the existing thread down the shaft, the die-nut may be OK.

So, don't cut off the old thread just yet.

Thanks Crank, I apprecite the offer. I thought a die nut was simply a different method and allowed for the use of a spanner instead of the tap handle.

PM incomming.

It is a 12/1.5 and I'm struggling to find one.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Could you rethread both?
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

What are you trying to cut thread onto?

Anyone with some experience using a metal lathe should be able to cut that pitch on the lathe for you, so perhaps try your local engineering / machine shop.

Bore the knob and just glue it on to the shaft?

Perhaps a 15/32 NF will work.

A mate made a custom gearknob for me out of aluminium and has already cut the internal thread to 12/1.5. I need to extend the thread on the gear lever which is also 12/1.5.

Glue you say;)

Ream out the hole and stick it over the shaft with epoxy to keep it in place.

Not sure that is a good idea, what if I want to remove it to replace the leather boot oneday?
