In Ceiling speakers - sound reflections
« on: February 01, 2012, 08:53:01 pm »
Hi,

I've just installed four B&W 382 speakers in my lounge/Dining room (5x10m room). The reason I went with in ceiling speakers is that the previous house owner (just bought the house) had installed in crappy ceiling speakers, and I didn't want to leave them in there, and couldn't be arsed fixing the ceiling.
Anyway, I am experiencing poor sound quality, most pronounced in the mid range. The mid range sounds slightly muffled, and further away than it should. I have to turn up the volume to hear the singer, which means I am getting a very uncomfortable listening experience. The bass on a number of songs is ridiculous - boomy and muffled.
I have a B&W ASW610 sub woofer in the same room, but the boomy bass does not seem to be coming from the sub (I've turned it off and still get the same mushy bass)
The speakers are running off an integrated amp - HK3390 - which by all accounts seems to be a pretty good amp, so I don't think the problem is there.

I think the problem is sound reflections from inside the ceiling. Does this sound right?
If so, what can I do to alleviate the problem? I want to enjoy my music at low volume, and listener fatigue is something I was trying to avoid by spending all this cash!

Thanks for your help.
