Unless you use I Pod classic I fail to see why folks like docks so much. Apple TV or Airport Express, I Pod Touch or I Phone and airplay from your listening seat and navigate the tunes with the pod in your hand. (For less cash).

A nice DAC does help.

Together with one of these I have not had as much HiFi fun other then vinyl for a few years.

Hi-Phibian, to be honest to you i don,t have any idea how to use an i pod as i was never interested in one. I have heard the the Wadia 171i together with the Wadia power dac150 sounds excellent. So i want to try and replace my Rotel RCD170 with one of these. If i manage to find anything that suites my pocket and my ears i will have to learn how these things work.
What exactly is this in the Pic ,and is Belcanto not to expensive. I am trying to sell my Rotel equipment to fund my new project ,and i honestly want this to be the last.
So are you suggesting that i use this with a nice DAC,so how does this work ?

There was a 170i in the avsa classads two weeks ago for R2.5k. Don't know how much it differs from the 171i.

The Bel Canto C5i is an integrated dac amp. 60W RMS into 8 ohms, 120 into 4. MM Phono input, Line input,  line (pre amp) out, headphone amp, coax x2 toslink x2 and USB. It runs cool, is even handed at all volumes and the fact that its designer started Bel Canto making SE Tube amps, means the sound is smoooth...

I use mine with an Apple TV for eg, digital out from apple TV to Bel Canto. Then control what you Airplay (stream over the air from your iPod) on apple TV with the I pod touch or iPhone as a nice graphic interface remote incl album covers, track titles etc.

All I am saying is docking an ipod puts the beautiful user interface far away from you, a waste. An Apple TV or Airport Express, digitally connected to DAC sounds cool and is lots of fun. You could also just connect the computer with USB to a Bel Canto c5i for eg and then use the idevice to control what the computer plays.

Laptop>Bel Canto> Speakers, great system. Add iDevice for cool control.

What I am saying is consider Apple TV or Airport Express with a DAC or digital input capable amp for eg.
