Thanks , I guess new speakers are inevitable some time in the near future

In the meantime however - do you think I could connect all my sound to the new amp then take it out with an analogue RCA stereo cable (red/white) to the DVD amp and play it though there (that way I'd keep the speakers connected their orignial DVD amp)? Or would that not work due to having two separate volume controls? (Apologies if that sounds ridiculous - 'sound' is not my forte)

Current speakers are rated 3 Ohms anyway so won't work with the 8 Ohm amp,

n all fairness, you will be much better off buying new speakers for the new AVR. Some great deals show up from time to time on the classifieds, most of the speakers in my system is mostly 2nd hand from the forum.

Yes, absolutely. I'd need to invest in new ones soon.

Just wondered if the above setup could work in the meantime?

It could work but then you'll miss out on the better amplification and sound quality of the new amp as you'll still be using the old amp's amplification while the new amp is just used to give you more inputs.

If your main problem is more imputs, then rather get a little audio video input selector switch box and add it to your existing system. It will actually sound better than pumping your sounds through two amps and costs much less. Google it and you'll see a wide choice - not sure where in SA you can get one.

Thanks

I did initially consider adaptors / converters but ultimately decided to upgrade and thought a new amp would be the first step.

This is the only audio output (RCA) available on the new amp. It it listed under video?

Would that work taking all the sound to the small DVD amp and its speakers?

Honestly, it's not worth it - that's an in and output for a video recorder and 2 audio channels only.
For surround sound you need 6 audio channels.

Well, think I'm going to get an Optical to RCA converter and an RCA switch as you suggested and plug everything into the small HTIB while I upgrade to proper speakers. No point in these loops, me thinks

Do you think I should run all components to the TV first and then take the sound from there to the DVD amp (with the optical to RCA converter) converter - or - run each component separately to the DVD amp with a switch?

Never heard of such a thing - I'm afraid you've exhausted my ability to provide any more usefull advice - maybe someone else will chip in.

No
No

My best advice - get rid of the HTIB.
