AC Ryan Veolo - Android Media Streamer
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:44:45 am »
I've been considering getting a new media streamer for a while now. I've briefly flirted with the idea of converting one of my HP Servers to a Media Centre with Ubuntu and HBMC, but let that idea go because getting a remote to work is painful and the LP GFX card is too noisy.

So I happened across this and it looks pretty interesting:

It runs Android and seems to have quite a bit of horsepower under the hood. Because of the Android OS, I think you are less at the mercy of the manufacturer to bring out software updates and you can depend on the community to enhance it - provided it's popular in the first place.

What you guys think? It's a little pricey as far as these go, but not unreasonable

Have you had a look at the ASUS oplay range?

Looks interesting but needs to mature a little, me thinks.
Think the "mouse" will get frustrating & the interface also looks a little cumbersome for a media player.
How much they asking for interest sake?

I've been reading up a few reviews and the common thread through these are that the device needs to mature quite a bit. The fact that it currently only runs Android 2.2 and that it doesn't have an IR receiver also puts me off (so that means my Harmony remote won't work with it). None of the Harmony RF remotes would work either - the thought of going back to having 2 remotes does not appeal to me in any way.

They going on special now for around R2k ex. VAT. While a little put off, I still really like the idea though and will be keeping my eye on this new tech as I think the second wave of these devices would have many of the kinks worked out.

HmMm...

Why not just get a Asus ENGT520 SiLENT/Di/1GD3(LP) GFX card [Silent + low profile] and follow the Step by step instructions on setting up an infrared remote control in Linux?

Is the heatsink too large?
How's about the Sapphire HD5450 then? Pulled a LP one out of my one server & plugged it into my HP MicroServer:

You can get it @ Nivo for R.337.95 or Sybaritic for R.324.oo

I have a similar one [not low-profile tho] in my old HTPC, with a Zalman VNF1000 fanless VGA cooler...
That should also work inside the HP MicroServer, as the Zalman VNF1000 is a reverse mounted heatsink

Yup, heatsink too large. I got an Asus ENGT430 and it juuuuuust fits. But the fan was too noisy. I was planning on running Ubuntu with XBMC on a microserver, but in order to do this you need to use an NVidia card for GFX acceleration, it don't work too good on AMD. But as I said in the other thread, I'm going to rather do another build for an HTPC as even the Microserver itself is too noisy for my liking.

You prob just need to update your Mesa 3D lib... I can run the HD5450 perfectly on openSuSE and even play 3D games on it in Linux

I wonder if the Thermalright TY-140 will fit in the HP MicroServer?  Seems too much hassle to do, and you're sorted in any case with the new HTPC build.
