But perhaps one should accept that it effectively means "Discount, please!", and be done with it.

exactly.
we don't start a thread every time someone's asking too much either...

Mmm some of you guys are not getting the point.

Yes I really don't mind offers - that's only reasonable , the guy making the offer is being reasonably honest about what he's prepared to pay. Whether I accept it or not is up to me.
I pretty much expect it most of the time - I think everybody here does .

But a "Whats your best price" offer is bullsh1t and its normally done at the end of the negotiation after many questions regarding condition , shipping etc. After this very small window of opportunity to build and gauge a form of trust between buyer and seller , the buyer just kicks you in the nuts.
Where's the honesty in that - Is the buyer spineless?
That's why many people won't engage with a buyer after that as they choose not to stoop down to that level.

I know the game of "Whats your best price" is one you will encounter from time to time but often its just a pure waste of time becuase as many have pointed out it can get dragged out virtually to your front doorstep and then its not a laughing matter.
I think its reasonable clever to try and avoid that which Is why I posted this ;)

I have lived a long and fruitful life and have learned by experience that "what you sow, you will reap"
If in the past I pushed for maximum discount etc. I found that usually the item I bought broke or was stolen soon after I obtained it.
I have since decided and have proven to myself that if I pay the asking price I end up with a product which lasts and gives me great pleasure in way it works.
If I think the seller wants too much for the item, then I will not respond to his advert. Simple as that.
If after I have already agreed to his original asking price and he offers a discount without me asking, then I will accept his discount as a gift from him. and thank him for it. Haggle, twist arms call to sharpen his pencil all go against the grain for me.

If it's any consolation, the couriers quoted me R152, now they're charging R192.  But I'm not taking it lying down.  I simply sold the MS 20is at my cost - runs against me grain - where's the fun in that ;D

Hey pappa ;)

I'm usually open to negotiating and especially like helping the guys that i know for certain aren't too well off, makes me feel great knowing they have a toy in their possession they would not have been able to afford new

But then you get the otherwise crowd....loaded but want to negotiate to the point of paying peanuts, why not just go buy it new then rather, save me and yourself a lot of back and forth. For these dudes the price is usually not neg

When i purchase second hand goods and the gent  is courteous, well mannered, the equipment is in good nick and the price is reasonable i will not ask for discount. If the goods are not as advertised i will let them know of my dissapointment and offer price X. Some peoples definition of "excellent" , "as new" condition is beyond me especially in the car trade  ;D

Must say most guys on this forum i have met personally and they are really great chaps. I therefore usually advertise here first and if unsuccessful and i am in desperate need of moola i will resort to Gumtree/Junkmail

If someone agrees to pay a certain price, and then starts to haggle when they arrive........ Clearly they didn't want it and are just trying to get it cheap because they probably have a buyer lined up etc....... >:(

I don't take kindly to such primitive behavior...  ;) I'd rather throw said item in the bin, or give it to the SPCA to do whatever it is they do with things given to them.  ;D

Q:What's your best price?
A: 600

Q: will you take R500?

I'm going to write 'Logic' on a stick so I can hit people with it. Maybe best doesn't mean best any more.
LF: Cheap but decent interconnects so I can try to hear the difference, or not.
