UPS parts
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:08:51 pm »
Just looking around the office... I can see about 5 or 6 of them that are not being used for some or other reason.

Are there any parts that can be salvaged and used in one's DIY adventures?

ups 's usually have center tap transformers  but not very suitable voltages.
i salvaged a couple of 6-0-6 v transformers from a single 12v7Ah battery ups.

if it is a 24 or 36 v ups you might be lucky.

if you listen long enough , even guy's have something to say.

APC Backups RS 800

If you have a working one which puts out nice filtered AC then you can just use it for your equipment.
LF: Cheap but decent interconnects so I can try to hear the difference, or not.

Well I would imagine that these are in various states of decay   ;)

I've also got a busted UPS on my desk here that I will surgically inspect with a hammer.

Hahahaha

in a similar vein... laserprinters are fairly high current devices, correct?

I wonder if they have something usable in them.

We've got server UPS lying around at work. Would UPS's smooth out power surges and the like?

This is actually their primary function. Keeping the device on for an extra couple of minutes is almost secondary in my opinion.

It depends on the UPS. Cheaper UPS products don't actually filter the mains AC, rather monitor it and step in when there is a problem.

Yip,

If you want to filter the mains on cheap, don't get a UPS, get a Line conditioner.

They check for and filter surges, voltage spikes and brown outs (voltage drops).
