Pioneeer TS-W303F Sub
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:02:00 pm »
So a friend was tossing this out and I said hold the phone a minute... let me look at this first.

Is it worthwhile trying to DIY this?

I've built two subs using the Pioneer TS-W308, for the money they are pretty good.  Only problem with them is they usually require a big box.  The maximum SPL on these aren't as high as one would hope also.

Well considering that I got it for free  8)  (and I dont have a sub yet)... I should be able to make a half decent something with this guy?

Just battling to get the T/S parameters... found 2 different sets of numbers on the web so far

My opinion is this one is pretty close:
ts-w303f
160WRMS
500W peak
4 ohm
sensitivity= 94dB/W
displacement = 2.05liters (0.072cu.ft)
Revc=3.0
Levc=0.568
Fs=34.8
Qms=10.735
Qes=0.602
Qts=0.602
Vas=93.58 Lts (3.305 cu.ft)
Xmax=6mm

Hmm... Can't get winisd to accept those values... keeps complaining of the qms, qes, qts combo

Yes, those QMS, QES QTS values do not look correct

QTS is a combination of QMS and QES, it is unusual for QMS or QES to equal QTS and also for a driver to have such a large mechanical Q (QMS)

If the box works out to be to big for your liking, you could look at using a linkwits-rielly transform (equalisation) on the driver in a smaller box. If that is what you are after talk to tangmonster - he has done one recently and I think has boards for the circuit. The tradeoff by using equalisation is it will be less loud at maximum output.
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

There is a specific way to type in the values. Else winisd moans this might help:

The reason WinISD etc will moan is because this is a free-air woofer as indicated by the F at the end of the model number.

They can work sealed but it takes a bit of work to get them to sound 100% right.

Well I've tried all sorts of combinations now... and these things seems to go on forever.. no dropoff even at 10kHz  :)

Time to get back to work.. will play again tonight

The resembles the model i have of the newer version of this driver, so I think it's pretty close.

Awesome.. thank you sir!!!!    8)

Loaded it up and looks to be decent down to about 23-24Hz in a 190-200l enclosure tuned to 26Hz with a single vent. I'm getting all excited now with this freebee:)

Soooo.. am I correct in saying that I'll need to find a little mono amp to drive this from my Yammie AVR's pre out sub connection? How would the crossover work?

Crossover will be handled by the avr; you just setup the xo frequency you want. And yes you're going to need a seperate amp for the sub.

With the low xmax of this driver I'd suggest not tuning too low. Otherwise with the first explosion in a movie you might be hitting mechanical limits. A high-pass filter might be necessary too, to protect the driver from overexcursion below the tuning frequency.

Are you talking about cone excursion? In my WinISD model it peaks at about 2.2mm. That's still fine considering xmax is 6mm so 3mm either way. Have I got that correct?

Depending on the input(watts) you give it the excursion changes.
By default you have 1w going into the driver.
