Johannesburg 'safer than Cape Town'
2012-01-17 08:33

Jody Nel, Beeld

Pretoria - Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth are more dangerous than Johannesburg, according to a new study from a Mexican research group.

Cape Town is the 34th most dangerous place in the world and Johannesburg is 50th.

Durban and Port Elizabeth are also more dangerous than Johannesburg, according to the report released by the Mexican research group Seguridad, Justicia y Paz (Security, Justice and Peace).

The group compiles an annual list of the 50 most dangerous cities in the world.

Cities are listed according to how many murders are committed per 100 000 residents.

The researchers look only at cities with more than 300 000 residents where statistics on murders are available.

Most dangerous cities in the Americas

Johannesburg is last on the list, with 30.50 murders per 100 000 residents.

Durban made the 49th spot with 30.54 murders per 100 000 residents.

Port Elizabeth had 36 murders per 100 000 residents making it 41st, while Cape Town, with 46 murders per 100 000 residents, came in at 34th.

The cities in the top 33 spots were all in North and South America.

Cape Town is therefore the most dangerous city in the world outside of the Americas, according to the report.

San Pedro Sula in Honduras is the most dangerous city in the world, with 159 murders per 100 000 residents.

Juárez in Mexico is second on the list and Maceió in Brazil is third.

There are 14 Brazilian cities on the list and 12 Mexican cities.

Dangerous US cities listed in the report are New Orleans, Detroit, St Louis and Baltimore, which were 21st, 30th, 43rd and 48th on the list respectively.

According to the group, the actual murder statistics in countries such as Mexico are possibly higher than reported, as local governments often manipulate the actual murder rate.

Don't judge me for being quiet - no one plans a murder aloud.

What counts as a murder? 1 crazy guy with a gun in a school would sway these stats excessively, especially in a city that only just qualifies in terms of numbers.

In any city there's places you don't go.

Thats what I told my wife before moving from Ct to Jhb! There's about 4 x more people in GP than in the greater CT. Of course there will be more crime. But in all probability your chances are actually less to be a victim here than in CT. Helps being sh!t scared as well.....as long as you don't show it. ;D

I will say one thing though,

I 'feel' safer here than when I visit/holiday in DBN

Don't go to GP, would rather take a shower with a waffle iron

Judging by my own experiences here in Cape Town, I can well believe the Mexican statistics. On the other hand, one can use statistics to 'prove' almost anything.

mafioso.

PS In another thread, I mentioned the 3 house breakings and 2 house robberies we experienced here during the past month.

I called the investigating office at Claremont SAPS this morning for an update. I got a pleasant surprise as the bloke spoke well so that I could understand him and accordingly paid him a compliment for that.

He also informed me they obtained plenty of good finger and palm prints (unmatched as yet) and that they are presently awaiting the results from 'touch DNA' as the perp left headgear and other items behind each time he entered here.

I am amazed as it seems the SAPS is pulling out all stops to get this bloke behind bars.

Sooooo northerners, what's your average response when reporting things like this? I've lived in Durban so I know what the response is there. When you actually get the saps there on time with the burglars still in the premises the saps knock on the door. The burglars duck out the back and then the officers stand there making small talk with you about the weather etc while the perps are making there getaway.

That little comment about the numbers being manipulated in Mexico, I think they may, just possibly, be manipulated in the north too!

Previous place I stayed in CPT a complex of 42 units 2 robberies in 8 years. Current complex I stay in 0 robberies in 11 years.
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

In DBN you don't even have to take the trouble to report. In general, 'Not Interested' in your troubles. "Do you have insurance?'' If so, might as well just get your case number (on a bit of scrap paper from the mag/paper they're reading at the time) and off you go to your insurance company.

ALL the stats are skewed. By the time your city gets to top of the pops for crime, there's no chance Joe Soap reports being mugged. Ask your domestic worker what she does if she gets mugged with her week's earning: Dust off, walk on. No point in spending taxi money to report as the cops will never find the money back. Which is all she's interested in.
Sad, but true.

Saw an article by some local analyst/research companies completely rubbishing the report mentioned - dubious method, no clarity on how they gathered data, etc etc.

So probably a GIGO report.

I could not agree more.Anytime statistics are mentioned I do to a certain extent laugh.Any statistician can ensure that stats show you what they want.A good example of this is the CPI where basic food is purchased from xyz the cost of petrol has gone through the roof and don't loose sleep about the cost of electricity.all these are basic commodities.Crime stats are hidden from the population after all we don't want our great police force to look bad.Where are the stats on rape and other miscellaneous robberies.in which your dwelling is robbed and your privacy feels violated.Mafioso I do feel for you because I have been there before. Now I live in a fortress with armed response, electric fencing and dogs that will attack.Welcome to GP
