TV Plasma/LCD/LED advice
« on: January 12, 2012, 08:29:34 am »
Hi Guys

I'm in the process of shopping around for a new TV for my lounge. I currently have a 74cm Sony WEGA which I'm happy with, but I want to go the flat panel route. I've read a few threads on here about Plasma being better if you mainly watch TV or non HD content.

There are a few fairly large Plasmas I've seen on specials brochures recently, but they all seem to be HD Ready only, and not full HD, even though they have 3D capability. I currently use my TV to mainly watch DStv and I do have an HD PVR, with the occasional DVD being played through a fairly old generic brand DVD player. If I do go for a new TV I'll probably upgrade to Blu Ray/3D in due course.

So, with my setup, would a plasma cut it, or should I rather save up a little more and splash out on LCD/LED with full HD capability ?

Thanks in advance.

LCD/LED (in reality same thing, slightly different engineering) cannot compete with plasma where action/ fast movement is concerned.  Have a look at Hersch's and you'll find plenty Full HD plasmas at good prices, and a lot cheaper than LCD & LED.

Plasma all the way.  I always feel like I'm watching a movie on a computer monitor when viewing an LCD.

Take a look at the Samsung 50inch(ish) plasma. Good value and is Full HD. My dad got one from Makro in November for about R9000!

If you intend going the bluray route at some stage then you should definitely go the full HD route.
I to have a Samsung and for me it's a wonderful unit. Samsung to tend to push the greens a little high which cannot be rectified by calibration but the eye cannot see this so its not a major concern.

^^^ I got that exact same display and very happy with it. Prior to this I was firmly in the LCD camp but this display changed my mind about that. Mush better at SD than my old LCD was. I paid R11k for it though ::)

Speaking of which, I bought this display at DionWired. Generally they match the price of other retailers, but I wonder what's the chances that they'll refund the difference after I bought the TV? What's the chances ;D

Thanks guys.

As far as longevity goes, is there anything to consider here ?

Would a Plasma operate longer than a LCD/LED panel ? Is there any maintainence issue here, like a Plasma needing to go in for recalibration or whatever (I'm a total noob to this - as you can see) ?

Nothing like that to worry about.

ONe thing to consider is the fact that plasmas in general are quite reflective. So if you have a bright sunny TV room, LCD might be a better bet.
