Opinions on moving my subs, and how I plan on doing it?
« on: January 10, 2012, 03:40:27 pm »
I'm still having issues with my neighbour :o Got an SMS that my movies are still rattling his windows and vibrating his patio poles - now apparently this is intermittent as he says its been quiet since July and has now started again. Nothing has changed on my side, and I'm still listening at the same volume (-16dB on the 807 (I know that's irrelevant to the actual volume)

Not sure how I'm going to resolve this.

My first attempt is going to be moving the subs to the opposite ends of the room - and see if it affects the audio at all - and if it hopefully solves his problem - moving them a extra 5.5m away from him - and behind more obstacles (couch and table). Both subs are currently upfront, and will now be placed at the back of the room - one in a corner, and the other next to it. (probably not ideal - but I'm prepared to sacrifice a bit of quality to be able to enjoy my environment in peace).

I'm currently running each sub on its own cable from my 807 (7.2) - to test this I don't want to buy two new long cables, but rather by one cable and split it with a splitter at the end?

Just as a recap, its about 10-15m from the lounge wall (double brick)  to his rattling window - a vibracrete boundry wall, his grass , plants and pool, then his window.

The wavelength of a 35hz wave is about 10m.  22hz - around 15m.  So his in the sweat spot for some bass, i guess.

He should weather seals his windows, that will reduce rattles, and his electric bill a little.

Its the sort of situation where 'reduce' wont cut it  :-\

IMHO you've already taken reasonable steps, he now needs to take some too otherwise to hell with him.

Sure it's you doing the rattling? Most of the rattling in my house comes from loud drive-by car bass.

Thing is - he's already called the cops once, and then they ring my door bell and tell me to turn it down.. I don't really want this happening every weekend - granted, this was a much louder volume/

Bit of an odd situation really, because my windows don't rattle - and neither do plates in the kitchen, probably about 3m away from the subs.

He has now said I can send someone round to his place to see what he's talking about... but as per legal advice from an attorney - I shouldn't go round myself. Anyone know of company that specializes in windows rattling? :p

Yip... its a fairly quiet street.

Call the cops and complain about the same issue emanating from his place.

Tell him his rattling windows are disturbing your music.

But seriously, I would go for some sound deadening material on the wall and maybe try to isolate the subs from anything which is reverberating (do you have a wooden floor? Noise travels very well through ceiling cavities).

Bass trap?
LF: Cheap but decent interconnects so I can try to hear the difference, or not.

 ;D

Bass traps in all corners - I've even got one directly behind the sub woofers (between them and the lounge wall).

Those cheap wooden floors (can't recall the name), and we have a flat ceiling, with about 60cm of crawl space - and then house wall sides rise another 60cm above the roof... if that makes sense.

Is something like this a gimmick, I'd imagine its incredibly cheap to make: http://www.amazon.com/Auralex-Subwoofer-Isolation-15x15x2-inch-Charcoal/dp/B001140OZ0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1305518445&sr=8-2-spell&tag=hardfocom-20

We are about 2-3km from the highway, and if a big truck or if it's really busy you have a bassy drone at our home.
There's a lot of things that can cause his windows to rattle.  I'd suggest the weather strips, they about R2 a roll, and very easy to install.
If he doesn't want to fix the problem, screw him, you can't sacrifice sound quality :P

Call the cops and complain about the same issue emanating from his place.
Ring ring..."Hello, the next door neighbors windows are rattling my subwoofer, and it's causing quite an upset in our home"

He's said I can send someone round to have a look - apparently its mainly his glass sliding door - so my guess is it being something like weather seals. Out of interest, can weather strips be applied to a glass sliding door?

This will obviously be at my expense  :-\

Weather strips stick to just about anything, you must also be careful with placing them :) dry run it without removing the thing that covers the sticky area.
It really sucks to try and remove it from wood or window frames.  Usually just makes a big mess :D Haven't tried it on glass though.  If it will get sun it might not be a good idea.
Probably best to stick it to the opposite of what the glass is rattling against.

Atleast the expense of weatherstrips is cheaper than putting in bass traps, panels etc in your home :)

An attorney says you mustn't go round there?
I'm gong to be frank here but that's a load of kaka.
We live in SA boet, not the middle of Lichtenstein. Take your neighbour up on his offer and try the following:
1 x 6 pack of cold ones (find out what he likes)
1 x movie played from your house that has a lot of action scenes
Stand with your neighbour in his house sipping on a cold one, see if your subs cause a rattle and if so, offer to weather strip the offending window.
We live in close proximity to each other these days but that doesn't stop a bit of good old fashioned interaction to try and find a solution.
Let us know how it pans out!

The reason being is the neighbour has now threatened to sue me multiple times, and this time claims to have had papers prepared for doing such.

Would be interested to hear his grounds for suing and what he is hoping to achieve.

Try isolating sub from the floor (squash balls cut in half are a cheap start to see if it makes much difference).
