Android = Windows 98 experience
« on: January 09, 2012, 12:05:20 pm »
Forced restarts
Apps that crash
Apps that want to access to everything (including phonebook and SMS's) to turn on the camera LED (torch app)

Maybe its just me but I am getting more and more frustrated with my Android phone...

Android appstore is open for any one to publish their apps to. So half the code in there is done by school kids trying to make a buck or 2
Apple Appstore has a strict screening process, that strips all the crap, and all that gets through are the quality apps.
I will not touch an android phone, unless it is to set it up as a target on the shooting range :-D

While Android phones are incredibly handy at times and sophisticated I'm also finding myself more and more in situations where I'm seriously considering chucking the phone against a wall. The other day my phone rang and swiping the green phone dial just didn't do zilch and I couldn't answer the phone. Truly annoying when it lets you down at the most inopportune moment. I wouldn't rely on it in an emergency that is to be sure. A lot of it also down to shoddy programming. Having written software for mission critical software systems for a few years I'm sometimes amazed at the kind of crap that appears out of Android apps.

To be fair to Android my old Nokia XM5800 was just as flaky, but it did have a green and red button to answer and stop calls! Perhaps a dumb phone and tablet is a better combination.

My BB Storm II also used to do that. Wouldn't take calls and the screen would freeze at times. Does that make all BB's sh1t?

my point is that I am finding that even though Android offers incredible functionality, my user experience has become more and more one of restarts and work arounds... Windows 98 type frustrations...

Maybe they churning them out too quickly without too much real world testing...

We've got alot of BB contracts for business use and they're all very troublesome phones. Its the 8900, 8520, 9800, 9900 that often have to be restarted with slow typing functions, some wouldn't ring when called nor show any notification of such. Endless problems.

Almost everyone here has 9800's and no-one's complaining.

I've asked my manager to type someone's number to call and he did but I didn't see any numbers appearing on the screen so I asked him and he said he's phone is just too slow. My Nokia shows the numbers instantly 8)

Quite happy with my Droid, OK I have only had it for three months.

My wife's Nokia E7 also hangs, cant answer every so often, I think all the smartphones have these quirks every so often, some just have it more than others.

I only use my Android phone - a Galaxy Ace - around the house.  Connected via Wifi and Bluetooth.

It's great for use as a remote control, Winamp player and stargazing.

Wouldn't really trust it on the road.

That's a good and bad thing IMO.

Like you mention, everything that is downloaded have been checked by thr iPolice and approved. I'm confident in what I download - I know it'll work.

But the downside is the range of applications that Android have are much better than in the Apple store. My Android friends come to me almost daily with a fantastic little app that Apple has or will never have.

It's a balance I guess

Had no issues so far with my SII , was incredibly useful on holiday *maps , banking , calls , sms , 8mpix camera , videos , wifi hotspot for my laptop, google for tourist spots , car performance and speeding alerts , skype calls , games, night vision camera and so on * , never skipped a beat , bat life was great. My kid has a BB and she has never complained about any issues cept when the BB service went down. Neither of us has ever had issues where we have to reboot. I have not yet bought a paid for ap , all freebies, Had one or 2 aps I deleted as they were crap , but I suppose you can't really bitch if its free.

My iPhone 4 has done the same thing on numerous occasions. It also needs to be shut down periodically when it starts misbehaving.

End of the day none of them are great, as a smartphone user you're an unwitting participant in the world's larger beta testing program.
