Eventually
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:10:04 am »
Assembled my Seas Trym speakers yesterday. (Stands still need to be finished as well as grills). Norval did the crossovers for me and dang these things sounds nice. Me and Charmain could not tear ourselves away from them and we have not even listened to vinyl yet.
From time to time we want to give the speakers a bit of a workout and for this I add an old Yamaha 10" active sub. Problem is if the sub gets switched off for more sedate music the music sounds 'thin/flat', causing me to leave the sub on.
Two questions:
1. Does the sub still cut the frequency even when switched off?(Well does it cut it all?)
2. I am sorely tempted to add a better sub (or 2). But are baffled(punn intendid) by all the options. IB in the ceiling or an active sub(s) using the SEAS 10"ers(that was sold recently on this forum for a huge bargain  :(  )

Any suggestions appreciated(seems I am a bit of a bass head).

En hoe lyk die goed?

No, sub should not be doing any cut off to main speakers unless wired via sub and even then it is vary rare that the sub has a high pass filter for the sats.

I tried looking up what drivers and tuning the Seas Trym has but on Solen's site it seems to be a 34L enclosure with 8.5'' driver and some others its a bookshelf speaker with, what appears to be, a 7'' driver.
Solen's site goes on to claim 28Hz-25kHz. Which, if actual, would have been just dandy for me. Perhaps give us some more information about your set-up, room and music peference.

Personally I'm not a big fan of subs in a stereo system, although, admittedly, I've heard some that sounds really good.
Have you tried moving the speakers closer to the wall? That, together with a bit of absorbtion behind the speakers can bring out the bass while maintaining imaging quite well.

EDIT
Ok, just found it on Seas' website. Pictured is a bookshelf speaker with 34L volume and tuning of 34Hz.

I gather more of an asmathic boxer type. However that sound system is prolly a bit hard on fuel and rubber. Pics or it didn't happen (of the speakers, not of the Scooby)

Sounds like your port is not long enough - as in the port is tuned too high.

Look at the FR Plot. http://www.solen.ca/v1/domont/trym/trymcrv.jpg
That will most speakers go from 0 to 100zillion khz +- 1zillion db

Thanks Byrd, now I dont know much about this stuff but does that graph not drop quite fast from 70hz ? Or am I misreading it?

Tuned nice and low just below 40Hz with a gentle roll-off to that point and repaid drop below. Please note that this graph is 5dB per division so the response is quite extended actually. Effects noted might well be to do more with the room (which is from memory quite long front-back versus width)

Thats a nice little ornament.

One of the benefits of angling the tops of speakers is that your priced posessions are immune to becoming ornament stands. ;D

Sorry, my keyboard (maybe brain) seems to have Gremlins?

What I meant by that was as OraDBA69 has stated. If Solen is claiming 28Hz, then look at their graph at about the 30Hz Mark and see how many DB down that is. Even with room gain that seems ambitious to try and stake a 28Hz claim.

/\True!
I always wonder exactly how low a dB reading still qualifies a speaker for achieving that freq in the manufacturer's claims. ??? Depends how low they want it to go I guess. ;)
