Pta DIY meet
« on: January 05, 2012, 09:31:59 am »
Hi All

There seems to be quite a bit of DIY interrest of late amongst the Pta guys and I thought it might be a good idea to arrange a DIY home meet following on the Fest last year. The focus is not to make a showcase out of this but to share and assist one another and share experiences. I am thinking perhaps 6-8 people or so for starters on a Saturday morning because with more than that the program would be too crowded. To keep the focus on DIY we could do a quick 1-2hr build of a spare set of 3" Hi-Vi FR speakers or help someone rout a baffle, assemble a crossover or something. I'll have a few basic tools at hand

We can close proceedings with a braai over lunch weather allowing.

What do your next weekends look like? Something around the 21st or the Saturday before/after would work well for me.

If you have a project and are interrested in attending please post in this thread or PM me and I'll see what can be arranged.

Regards

Martin

UPDATE:

So the time is 9:00 am at Cirr
Attendants (if i've missed any, please PM me) I'll send directions via PM.

We can always do a quick active setup on projects or we can toast your woofers for kicks and giggles.

21st or later would suit me, although I won't have anything to show.

Won't be really about showing anything, more like sharing ideas, inputs, concepts, etc :) and some tinkering then some socializing :D

I am thinking a bit more hands-on. These things sometimes are only about the finished project and seeing as people post the costruction and what not on their threads it'd be nice to share in the making of these as much as in the listening. There are even enough components floating around surely that one could decide to just build an MDF cab and share in the development knowledge. I don't knock a pair of cabs out in 30 minutes like Cirr yet though 8)

We need to organise a DIY quick build(+- 3 hours),maybe someone draw up the plan, someone else organise the bits and plans for a x-over with lots of detail, and the build can be done the same time as the box build(also detailed plans, not elaborate, just a square box maybe).I have the place for the mdf build, parking for +- 6 cars, have a webertjie, only problem is the goeters for the x-overs and  the strongest I do is Lime milkshakes.

And we can do this every 3 months, and change the next time to a small amp(20w) for example,
it will definitely inspire those who come along to finish their respective projects ;)

We can always decide before hand in this thread on a box/driver config with some components (I am sure we have quite a couple of options between us) and bring a basic MDF Box and do a quick active setup that could be followed up with a passive later (I am geared for measurements and active cross and that way we could do more than one project even and compare).

Some guys could learn to rout a baffle with a circle jig, we could look at a passive x-o at the next meetup? We could make an open baffle system (Perhaps 15" bass + 7" mid + 1" what have you)

I have a semi-finished floor standing enclosure onto which I could make provision for a removable baffle. It has a lot of bracing and is destined for 2x RS180 and a RS28 with crossover assembled which we could build up in a hurry.

I am not much into speaker building - no tools ... more into the social side, but discussions on whatever can always be entertaining. As always I suppose the venue is the thing, although those do not necessarily need to be ideal every time. (Even if I manage to cut down the 1,5m tall weeds on my plot I cannot offer anything thataway - Oh! The weeds can be acoustically absorbent ......)

I also strongly support more frequent get-togethers, not necessarily involving huge set-ups per occasion. From my side (electronic)s  I can offer basic demo's showing square wave overshoots, latent instability and such simple things, whatever might interest a body ... a picture is worth a thousand words and all that.....
'Miracles' are not contrary to Nature - they are only contrary to our understanding of Nature

I'd also like to attend. I have a few drivers lying around at home and also at Martin's place. These could perhaps be used for either active or passive speaker building excercises. While I think a passive speaker design effort would require more that just one meeting, I have some ideas to reduce the scope of such a project and make it more realizable.

I also have some turntable parts (Rega Planar 3 and Hadcock Unipivot tone arm) that could form the basis of a turntable project if there is enough interest.  I'm prepared to donate what I have to someone from the group interested in refurbishment as a way of getting entry an level but still very good vinyl setup.

I will add to these thoughts later today when I have more time.
