HDMI <------> HDMI?
« on: December 27, 2011, 04:04:19 pm »
I have a Dell Vostro Laptop with HDMI terminal. So I figure it should talk to my Philips 46" LED TV which also has an HDMI terminal. Now I know you guys are a lot more knowledgeable than I on anything with fancy acronyms, but the TV reports "No Signal Detected". The Vostro reports it does not detect a second Monitor or Projector when I prompt it to do so. Running Windows 7 Pro.

Please explain to me in pigeon English why this does not work. I figured I would spend this rainy day watching some M*A*S*H episodes stored on my external HD from the comfort of my couch, but this was not to be.

Think it has something to do with Windows7, cos I also struggled to get it right. You have to change a couple of setting in control panel like 2nd monitor and the resolution/fps etc. Dunno why though.

That's the problem. Win 7 could not even see the Philips as a Monitor, so I could not change any settings. What did happen is when I tried connecting it as a projector, the laptop autochanged its own display to 800 x 600, reverting to its original settings when I 'disconnected' the projector setting.

Both times I tried HDMI from a PC to a screen I had overscan issues. This was fixed using an HDMI to DVI adapter on the screen. But you should at least get a picture.

Had a similar prob, a laptop would not turn on HDMI port, etc. After a while developed a little black magic dance of opening display properties, change settings, click heels three times, detect displays, squirt of holy water, close settings, change resolution, hum first movement of HMS Pinafore, apply settings, turn around anti-clockwise, reopen settings, etc.

It used to work it out eventually, but certainly not plug'n'play. You have to basically trick it into rescanning the HDMI port. And every machine seems to have a different level of HDMI petulance, it seems.

This appears promising, but then I need to run additional cabling for the audio.

I am toying now with PC HDMI--->CAT5/Tx--->Cat5/Rx--->HDMI---TV.  Would this work, with full A/V?

-two words -HDMI is a dark art in PCs, let alone notebooks!!
-I'd save myself the agony and use s-video or even VGA (D-sub) to S-Video or composite. Cheapest option.

Especially if all you are watching is MASH
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

Wot'cha mean? MASH is simply BRILLIANT! I think the final episode still holds the record for the most viewers in the USA, 125 million. Not bad for a series that had been running for eleven years. ;)

I'll settle for this, although it does mean running a separate audio pair. Currently, I only have MASH saved but will put more on once I'm satisfied that everything is A-OK.

I've not had any HDMI issues with my PC's (except when I used a crappy old cable and I didn't realise it).

Try a different cable and see the result?

Also, try boot up the machine with the HDMI cables all plugged in. I know HDMI somethings has handshaking issues on the older HDMI formats.

Performed the ritual as described by d0dja, and I have video! ;)

Unfortunately, I still do not have audio ;(

Have you guys got audio through the TV as well?
