TDA7294 Channel Noise
« on: December 25, 2011, 01:06:38 pm »
Hi all,

A while ago I aquired a TDA7294 based chip amp. It wasn't built very well and had messy wiring etc.

A precent project of mine has been to build a complete DIY system for my girlfriend (Speakers, Stands, Interconnects, Speaker Cable, Amp).

I decided to rebuild the TDA7294 chipamp into a new enclosure to match the rest of the system.

During the rebuilding process, I cleaned up all the wiring which required some resoldering etc. I managed to blow a hole in one of the TDA7294 chips because of a small solder bridge on the vero volume control board. None of the components (other than the chip) on either the amp board or the volume control board look like they took any damage.

Removing the solder bridge and replacing the chip resulted in a successful powerup, however the channel with the new chip has the following issues:
- When the volume pot is completely 'off', there is no sound out of either channel (as expected), when it is turned slightly up (above completely off), the (broken) channel produces sound but it is very soft, noisy and distorted - the other channel works as expected.
- Turning the volume pot up increases the volume on the working channel, but on the broken channel it has no affect at all - just the same soft distorted signal.

Any ideas? I'd really like to get this working ASAP.

Merry Christmas ;)

Chris

>look like they took any damage

...but quite possibly did. Invisible, semiconductor type damage.
