Technics SP-10 Mk2 Plinth Build
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:23:25 pm »
I have started on a plinth for my SP10. It has been rather slow going as I have not really had solid windows of time to work on this project....

I am using Kiaat (again - I have lots taking up space in the garage)... The twist this time are some decorative inserts of Oak and Panga Panga.

For the top I am using a mix of 22mm MDF and 18mm ply for strength (and incidental constrained layer damping).

The bottom will be removable and the plinth will have removable/interchangeable armboards...

Here are some pics of the progress thus far.

This is the first time i am trying inserts so cut me some slack if they are a little uneven.

BTW. Panga-Panga is friggin hard stuff!!  ???  :o  ::) I cut the recess for the inserts and then sandwiched the panga panga between the oak strips and glued them into the Kiaat. Once dried I flattened the inserts with a belt sander. The belt sander took strain going through 2mm thick Panga Panga.... What did please me though, is that my Festool cut through the Panga-Panga (Wenge) with minimal strain...

Thanks Mafioso. I tell you what though, some of that fine cartridge woodwork is also something else!!! Has anyone ever asked you for a cartridge in Wenge or Panga Panga?

wel done, i love the inlay.

Lets see if it all fits (and matches) first  ::)

It's gonna be interesting. I should of done two (plinths) at once... Since the pattern is cut already...

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all - may it brings many audio blessings :-)

Ag nee wat, a/r

That's just messing around. I do have a reasonable supply of hardwood - anything from Zim teak, afzelia, Canadian mahogany, snakewood, wild olive, ebony, african blackwood, black palm, red ivory to birch and beech.

I'm so useless with wood I've given my saw table to a friend :-[

Mmmmm. Why can I not plane, cut and sand on Christmas day. Jesus was a woodworker after all...

Anyways, back to the garage today...

Laminated the armboard (Kiaat onto MDF) and cut the plinth sides and did the glue-up. I also added a first coat of MS filler to the MDF...

OK, cut the armboards. I have four of them in two different variations. The thinner of the armboards are for any arm... The two thicker armboards are 6mm proud of the plinth top in order to raise a Rega arm to the right height from the platter...

I also routered the edges of the plinth with a 45 degree chamfer... Looks nice. I think. The first picture is to give you an idea of size. The second is of the routered plinth.

Just as a side note. I am very happy that I put the first coat of MS filler onto the MDF part of the plinth as I can clearly see where I have some handling wear that can easily be flattened and repaired before I do a final coat. I often find with MDF that I cannot see the imperfections until it is too late and I have started on the final finish coatings... By then it is a pain to remedy fine scratches and handling dings....
