Favourite Album of 2011
« on: December 21, 2011, 02:44:03 pm »
To wrap up 2011. What would you say was your favourite album released this year?

For me, In Flames - Sounds of a playground fading

It is harder than what most people would like, although it reintroduces the melodic element back into heavy metal.
That is something I have missed amongst what pass as metal these days.
Also,  together with the melodic side, it is also very progressive, so eases into the heavy stuff, and usually starts with awesome riffs and hooks.
The songs them selves are very catchy, and you will have them stuck in your head if you have listened to the album for a couple of weeks.

The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
It's not the size of the sub, it's where you place it.

Surtur Rising - Amon Amarth

One kick-ass viking metal ride from start to finish!

The songs them selves are very catchy, and you will have them stuck in your head if you have listened to the album for a couple of weeks.

...And that's the biggest problem with In Flames. Everything after Clayman is just not what they're truly capable of. All that Anders Frieden's fault.

How is their older stuff? I only discovered this because Tuks FM played their music for a while from this album. I in particular like The Title Song.
And I will go check out that Surtur Rising. I LOVE Melodic Viking Metal.
When Holmgard And Beyond comes up on my ipod I get this strong urge to grab my balls, run though a hayfield with battle axe held up high and and shouting out for Valhalla...

LOL! Yes, I know exactly what you're saying.

In flames started out in the early 90's, their song's were less catchy, and less 'clean' vocals. However, the guitar work(melody) is brilliant with some acoustic passages inbetween. December Flower from the Jester Race album is a great song for example. Subterranean is also awesome. Their sound changed with Colony and Clayman, which is a little less technical and a more catchy. Everything after that became more catchy and softer with each release.

Mogwai - Hardcore will never die, but you will.

These Scottish guys are not so easy to find locally, but then again, which good new music is? The wife was in a generous mood and brought back a huge chunk of their back catalogue from Croatia.
Their music is hard to pinhole, and Wikipedia's definition of it as " post rock " does not help. They do not like singing, and with 3 lead guitarists they can kick up a sound that will bring tears to your eyes and blood from your ears.

Got my copy of " Hardcore will never die, but you will " on vinyl to test the LP 12. Thought it would be appropriate.
