i posted a mini review in the headphone section, i own the studios and a pair of senn hd 598, the senns blow the monsters away when it comes to realism, but they are abit light on the bass. the monsters whip ass when it comes to bass and they definately provide alot of detail, but i do think they emphasis the mid bass a fair bit,but i bought them for when im traveling, and for this purpose they are spectacular. the noise cancelling works really well, and they cut out alot of the backround noise.

the monsters are also better built than the senns and come with a nice travel bag, and special cloth, and airline adapter and 2 cables. for critical listening at home, i choose the senns, but because they need a proper amp they not good for traveling. the monsters have a built in amp (for the noise cancelling) and if you plug em into a ipod or laptop they really perform well with no long term listening fatigue to speak of, and shine when it comes to rock, electro and so on, anything with a driving beat, think linkin park or nine inch nails, make the monsters sound awesome.

I've had the "Tour" for over a year now, and haven't even thought about getting others.

The fact they've lasted for this long for me is impressive, and I use them every single day.

This belongs in the headphone section!

I would look at the Shure SRH-840 or Audio-Technica ATH-M50 before looking at the Beats if you require an all-round good closed headphone that is not too expensive (The M50s are unfortunately a bit overpriced in SA, but they have amazing sub-bass). If you require active noise cancellation you could look at the Sennheiser PXC350/450, but that is about the only place where the Beats are really competitive plus on build quality and looks.

Sennheiser HD598 should be an excellent allrounder, but I think the HD558 is a bit more bass-heavy, so perhaps thats a decent option. the HD558/598 also look a bit fragile IMO.

But heck for the price of the Beats you could get the ultimate bass cans, the Denon AH-D2000 (+-R3500) which should be just brilliant for electronic and rap music. Only issue is low isolation unfortunately, but these have incredible bass and comfort! They are a firm favourite of the headphone community. And if you check with NoSnipeLimit perhaps he can get you a Sennheiser HD600/HD650 if you need an open headphone with better bass response. The HD650 is more bass heavy than the HD600, but HD600 is more neutral. The HD580 I have really outshines the HD595s I had when it comes to bass response and a neutral sound signature. These need amplification however.

If you want to save yourself some money on good bass cans, get the Sony MDR-XB500 which should outperform the Beats at less than a thousand bucks. They look pretty cool with their oversized pads and should be very comfortable too.

i heard those sony cans, they were disapointing, they seemed to mask the vocals with booming bass. depending on intended usage i would say its between hd 598 and beats, the 598's are very good cans, but they need a amp to get them singing, the beats on the other hand can give good volume with low powered devices without pushing them to their limits.

No, fair enough, heard quite a number of complaints about them being muddy sounding, but then I often hear that on Head-fi about the Beats as well. Perhaps the XB700s are a better option compared to the XB500s? But the choice really depends on the topic poster's music preferences.

What he said x1000. I'm sure the Beats are decent headphones it's just that for the money I could probably find you something better...*cough* Sennheiser *cough*

senn's pricing in SA is shocking, my 598's cost as much as the beats and the build quality is night and day between the two with the beats being better built in every pretty much every aspect. the noise cancelling is also a major plus in favour of the beats, so in terms of value for money, i honestly can tell you the beats offer more bang for your buck. the senns i have only start singing when you add on a decent amp which costs more dough. for 3k the beats are not cheap, but for you still get more product than the senns (which i still love too bits)

NoSnipeLimit had the HD600 and HD650 at very reasonable prices in my view.. I would have jumped at the chance, but I'm getting some nice Hifiman orthos for x-mas which my father managed to find in Beijing. If you require an amp to make the HD598 shine you might just as well go to the next level which is 6** series. Those are pretty bulletproof and of high quality materials, all parts and cables are replaceable (and upgradeable) and I think they look pretty decent as well and then you have Sennheiser SA support for 2 years. What is there not to like! ;D

^I'm so going green with envy at the moment. What are you gonna amp them with?

For approximately 3k you're in hd 650 territory and the 650 was a top of the line Senn for a reason. I had a listen to my cousins pair and I'd go for the Senns anyday.

the  series is nice but i cant stand the fake blue looking marble finish on the one, and the 650's are okay but are by no means good looking headphones in my opinion, plus with a side by side listen between the 600 and 598's you will find their isnt much between them, the 598's are more exciting maybe and lack some of the high end detail, but not by much.

bottom line, all the senns in this price category are good but need a decent amp which the beats dont, the beats were never designed to compete with the senn 6 series or even the 598's. they are made for a different application (portable big sounding, good looking, strong headphones) and they built to last and travel, like the two cables included (one for ipod with the button and microphone) and the flight adapter and the hard-ish carry case.

it all comes down to the expected use, if you wanna use em with your laptop or ipod, or i phone then the beats are one of the best headphones to get, but if you want super critical listening then get the 6 series and budget for a good amp and great source.

I prefer to listen to my headphones rather than look at them mate. :P Furthermore, I have to ask did you listen to the HD 600s with an amp?

Well, even in this category, I'd still opt for the PX 200 or the HD 25-SP II which is almost legendary among dj's. As I've said previously, the Beats are a good headphone just if it was my money, I'd buy something else.

Cheers
