The most shocking facts, for me, are: (1) Led Zeppelin and REM never had a number 1 single, while Rihanna had 10; (2) more people bought an album by Billy Ray Cyrus than any Bob Marley album; (3) Creed outsold Jimi Hendrix in the USA; and (4) Justin Bieber exists. :o :o :o

And Creed is voted the worst band EVER!!! How did they manage that?
Under construction again...

Possibly bear in mind that the people who belong to this forum really care about music. For us its a "BIG THING", that brings huge richness into our lives. For most people, music is just something that happens along the way, so when the industry manufactures the latest "superstar", they go and buy it, because the industry says it's good. Because we care about, and have usually learned about it, we cast a bit deeper, and much more critically.
Maybe that is why my collection is full of obscure stuff that never made the charts, and most people have never heard of!
I tell you, we are here on earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different - Kurt Vonnegut

From the film Wayne's World (1992):
Wayne: "Good call. It's like he wants us to be liked by everyone. I mean, Led Zeppelin didn't write tunes everybody liked. They left that to the Bee Gees."

For most people, music is just something that happens along the way, so when the industry manufactures the latest "superstar", they go and buy it, because the industry says it's good.

That applies 100% to cars, food, films, music, television sets, computers, clothes....

The quality is not relevant to most of the buyers, the get an item because the media tells them its the 'socially correct' thing to do.
