Don't they still require the bank account holders permission to a reverse an EFT?

I made a deposit into a B&B in Durban for accomodation for a night. As it was World Cup, he wanted the money to secure the booking - which I did and sent him proof (bank > bank as well ... so instant).

He got back to me the following day saying it didn't arrive and his branch told him an EFT wasn't possible because xyz - and I should do it again. I told him I'm not paying again as it was successful (bank confirmed) at which point he was a little rude. I decided to book another B7B and contact ABSA to reverse.

They told me they needed his permission and after 5 days, he finally gave it and the EFT was reversed.

It may not be a dodgy seller, but anyone that wants to sell you an amp for R7k and not prepared to take photos can take a hike in any case. There's very few cell phones these days that don't have cameras, so that's no excuse. It sounds like the guy is just lazy, or not prepared to work hard enough for R7k

it is a difficult one. i'm based in rustenburg and have bought a few gear from memebers as far away as capetown. the only way is to trust that their gear is in good condition and working properly. i do a research on the components over the internet and have to rely on reviews, it's a gamble but buying any equipment is a gamble whether you audition it first or not, because there's no guaranteee that whatever you are buying will sound the same in your system and after some time the sound changes, it's also a gamble for the buyers because, you deposit your money into some guys account that you don't know any don't know what you'll recieve. the ECT act may cover you but if the guys sells you a dummy you may have difficulty in proving that he did not say he sold as is (voetstoets)

A person calling himself Lesley Brown (cell no: 079 777 1049) contacted me in early December regarding a Marantz DV7001 that I advertised on AVSA. He agreed to buy it and I informed him that I shall only post the Marantz on receipt of payment. A few days later, he notified me that the money was in my account and demanded that I post the Marantz. On further inspection, the bank informed me that Mr Brown had deposited a cheque and that I should wait for it to clear. Seven working days later, the bank informed me that Mr Brown had stopped payment on the cheque. Needless to say, he has not been answering his phone or replying to my emails (lbrown@contractor.net).

This guy phones me earlier the week, very interested in the speakers I have for sale. He had a foreign accent and it was a little hard to hear him. We had a quick chat about the speakers and he wanted me to meet him ASAP so he could get them from me.

I had a very similar situation this week, at least I think so.
Within an hour of my speakers hitting the AVSA classifieds I get two SMS's.
I call the first chap, he has an accent, asks me if they are still available and I respond yes.
He then wants to meet as quick as possible, tells me he is in Bedfordview, I explain that I am at work, he then asks whether I can mail him a picture of said speakers as quick as possible.
This all starts feeling rather uneasy, I say yes when I have a chance to which he responds , "keep them, consider them sold"
I get an sms. an hour later asking if I have sent the pics yet, this I ignore. I mean, what's the rush ?
I phone the other chap (also with accent) who was (pardon my english) one of the rudest bastards I have ever dealt with, only second to the arrogant tjop who tried to haggle me on a cartridge.
The second dude says he will call me in the evening.
I get a call at around 18:00 pm. from the first dude ignoring his call, my attitude was that if he is serious and he really wants them he will call me back the following day.
This never happened.
All this sounds very suspect at R 40 k. and I am not prepared to take a risk.
This really smells of a scam and I get a feeling the two individuals are in cahoots.
If you guys wish for me to give the names, I could do so.

From what you stating, they definitely sound like chancers. I doubt putting there names and numbers here would make a difference, but just state their names here, not the numbers. If someone suspects something they can alway PM you to compare numbers. A guy that can't afford to call you, but only send an sms, is definitely not gonna afford to buy your speakers.

It's a pity that they found the AVSA classads site. I always felt that was a safe haven.

So please beware.

I am also quite annoyed with the whole thing.  I'm in Bloem, can't always go up to Joburg to see stuff in person, so I make use of EFT. I don't have a problem with the funds clearing before the guys ship, but I lost out on two good deals with this problem.

Yeah I nearly fell today. I posted an add in the Junkmail selling a Jamo Surround Sound System that is on special at the moment. Man did the SMS's start to fly in. Normally if you are really interested and worried the the item is gone you call. so the alarm bells whent off. I have had 6 messages in 4 hours. That has never happenend before.

I do this for a little more exposure on the web and hopefully pick up a buyer who acctually wants the product, which has happened before.

I get this SMS "im interested" so I call and find out that I have more than one, as I run an audio visual business. So now they want 2 or three of these Jamo systems. I know when it comes down to it how hard it is to close sales.

I tell this dude that I cannot release the goods without the cash in my account and fully cleared. Now I hear nothing. Pricks!!!I am tring to make a living and they are trying to pull a fast one. Oh yeah I sell NAD AV receivers, and he said that he knew all about them, please only if you are a real audio fundy and take a great interest in audio equipment you will know who NAD is.

I love south africa but sometimes, this place can get a bit much, I just wonder when and if there will ever be just straight business.
