Warning - got an offer on a CD player I put up on the AVSA classifieds by a man named Paul in Johannesburg. He chatted with me for a long while about the system he was building and knew exactly what he was talking about in the high end hi fi realm. He phoned on a Friday and asked for banking details which I supplied. He sent me a proof of payment via SMS, forwarding me his notify-me sms from Nedbank... I told him that I'd send it to him on Monday and he said fine. Then he called again and started pushing for me to send it that day. When I couldn't he started sending names of couriers and telephone numbers, pushing hard, hard, hard. I resolved to leave it until his money was in my account, but it never came...

If he calls to purchase - Definitely not a South African and I have his phone number but I'm not sure that I should post it.

Not sure if it is the same Paul, but I'm trying to sell my Logitech Z5500 so I can buy the stuff that PAPPA3 is selling. I did not list my phone number on the ad.

Got an email from a Paul (email address was paul.dde@mail.ru) saying he has been looking for this for a long time and to send me my banking details so he can do a cash deposit and we can meet somewhere for me to deliver it. He sent his phone number in the email. So I call the number and it's a West African, says he lives in Rosebank but willing to travel to wherever I am to pickup the speakers. I gave him my banking details (old ABSA acc that I closed 9 months ago, but remember the acc number cos I use it as part of 1 of my passwords  :D ).

Anyway, 10 minutes later I get an email with proof of payment etc. I called Paul, said he wanted to pickup the stuff urgently as he is leaving to Mauritius in the evening (last night). I told him that I will have to wait until the funds clear into my account (like that's gonna happen), he says he can't as his flight is booked for the night, I told him sorry, 'he can pick it up when he gets back. I tried calling him this morning, get a disconnected tone.

Then he emails me from the gumtree ad again with the same initial reply as the first time but no cellphone number BWAHAHAHA

Don't know whether to even go through that whole cr@p again with him or not!!!

I tell you I lost it on Thursday, I had to go out just to cool off. I'm not going to mention names yet but this dude is going to KAK. Busy putting all the information together to zap him.

As far as I know with this whole RICA thing that all cell no's had a address attached to them. Does anyone know where I can get that info from? I would like to know the "real name" and address of this dude.

I hope this goes well, cuz this dishonesty must come to an end.

P.S just be careful when they say they are buying equipment through a company! Stick to your guns and never release goods before payment or COD.

I was also approached after placing an ad for a very expensive bit of kit on AVSA by a gentleman calling himself Gary, who wanted the unit extremely urgently, yet had no idea what interconnects he was going to use. He also sounded foreign, so I decided not to sell to him, but he insisted on paying cash immediately and SMS'd me proof of an EFT, late on a Friday afternoon. I had no idea how to verify whether the transaction was indeed a cash deposit or a cheque, but fortunately my Bank had an after-hours fraud hotline, and they verified that it was indeed a cheque deposit, so I let him know that he can only have the equipment once the cheque clears. Needless to say, I never heard from him again.

So after much deliberation and thought I've decided to put my "beloved" QUAD esl's up on the AVSA classifieds page due to them just being too big for my new listening room.

After about 30 mins of the ad being up I get an sms from someone called Craig from number 076 362 4408 asking for my bankdetails to deposit the funds. All of it without even phoning to discuss the sale.

I replied asking him to please phone me to confirm, but 3 hours later I still have not received any response.

Should I classify this as an unsuccessful scam ?
