Madisounds Kits
« on: November 30, 2011, 11:06:35 am »
Hey everyone

I did a search and can't find any recent mention of madisound in this forum. What's the feeling around the current entry level speaker kits that this site offers? Im just starting off on my audio addiction so want to cross it with my other passion :)

This 2 way kit is just shy of $100  http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/aurasound-ns6-speaker-kit-8-ohm-woofer-parts-only/  and shipping is about $50

So total investment will be round about R1500

So what do the pros around here say... worth it if you include the fun factor?

Don't forget to factor in the import duties.

Madisound is a well-respected seller of audio components. They have been mentioned here several times.

My suggestion is don't go for the enry-level stuff. Lots of effort; minimum benefit. Try something more mid-range; same effort, better result. I recommend you contact Ian/JimGore on this forum and see what he has available.

Yeah... aware that VAT and import duties need to be added still.

I'm just scared of spending mega thousands seeing as I'm just starting off on this audio journey. (Plus the wife would kill me)

Ian/JimGore... does he build and sell DIY Speakers or do you mean I must contact him for a good deal on off the shelf products?

Thanks for the feedback!

Ian imports parts and makes inductors. Many of us here have bought from him. Very helpful guy.

Read the DIY section for some idea of what guys are doing in terms of procuring parts and what they are building. There might even be some drivers for sale.

I don't know the Aurasound drivers, so I can't comment on that. Madisound does seem to be very good ito service and actually having what they advertise. For the money, there are also locally available drivers you could consider, like PQSound's Viston range and the stuff from Scottronics. The later not dealing in much hifi drivers as far as I'm aware. Visaton does however have a number of kits on their website. On the other hand, sometimes budget drivers work out brilliantly, like Stereophreak's speakers proved. They were even cheaper than the Aurasounds you mention. I would however second Shonver, it is a lot of work and adding the drivers and xo is the easiest part. If you buy locally, you can also buy what you need as you go along and spread your cost that way. As much as your wife will be unhappy about the total cost, I'm sure she will approve of a nice new bit of 'furniture' added by your efforts. :)

Aura drivers are generally over achievers (I have used a few, not the NS6  though) , can't go wrong there.......... the NS6 is also used here: http://speakerdesignworks.com/NS6project_1.html , so the pedigree is ok, and is used in a proven design - Curts' work is world class.
.............the tweeter is a good one and a Zaph favourite, so the kit combo has merit for sure, I say go for it !
Cheers

Greetings,

If you are in the Jo'burg area ,there is also a place called RSE Electronics ,and they have very good and reasonably priced  range of speaker kits as well as build yourself amps etc.Google RSE Electronics to get their details.

Take the plunge, Abu. There are many ways to avoid the wrath of the missus. Tell her you found the speaker kit at Cash Crusaders for R50 or that it came free with a year's subscription to My Fair Lady, which you bought for her. ;D ;D

I struggle as well on my CellC internet. Don't know why. I have thought of whether some of these guys just block certain IP ranges outright.

The NS6 will provide poor bass if any. If that is not an issue to you, then go for it.

The speakers below would be more useful for similar money.

I think Stereophreak used these: (a good choice in my opinion)

Does someone have  a link to the Zaph project that Stereophreak referred to?
