3G Wifi Router - What to get
« on: November 29, 2011, 10:10:07 am »
I am thinking about getting a 3G WiFi router to get Internet access for all the WiFi enabled devices we have(Laptops, ePad, iPod)

Unfortunately 3G is the only option as we stay on a smallholding and telephone wires are stolen at regular intervals.

What is normally the wireless range of such devices as the best 3G reception is upstairs, but in general we would be connecting from downstairs.

The Netgear units are rather decent IMHO.

Wifi range is very difficult to estimate, depends a lot on the type of construction of the house, room layout, location of walls etc.

If the router is upstairs, you would possibly need to add either a range extender or change the location of antennas. I'd try borrowing a router to test.

i am using that one.

I actually get ok reception in the bedroom above the living room in the duplex we live in.

fyi:

e353 modem is not on the list , but it does work just fine on this router.

I have a Huawei Wireless Gateway E960 just lying around with its antenna. Has four ethernet ports, and can be USB powered. I used this with a Telkom simcard as my landline.

Signal around the house will depend on where you place the router, would suggest in the ceiling in a central point if you have access.

Open to offers, or to swop for what you have.

I have a LinkSys at home. You're welcome to come connect to it and check range when you come to my place, Abe. They're all roughly the same.

Aha! I shall do that first before making any decision. Thx Hein 8)

Agreed, the TPLink stuff = great value.

Stay far away from the TP link , I bough one that was dead out of the box, I drove all the way way to their supplier in Bedfordview where the owner basically gave me the middle finger when I wanted exchange it.

-Cannot go wrong with Linksys -Cisco made! If you want Abe, you take the unit I bought from Raffs for a test run.

The TP-link routers are good value for money. I'm using a Netgear MBRN-3000 3G router which is pretty nice and haven't had any issues with it, but the TP-link does basically the same stuff for a lot less.

Thanks Ash, much appreciated. Its not a huge expense as I have gathered, but I don't want to spend the money and sit with something that is of no use.

-I will bring it along to the AVForums Cape Town hookup at Hein's place. All you need is 12V-1A AC adaptor, as I bought it without it.
