My SQ car audio build
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:27:45 pm »
After selling off all my stereo stuff I decided I would start an SQ car audio build in my Golf III GTi. It's something I've always been interested in and started a few years ago and never finished.

What I have decided on is the 6.5" 2 way split system coupled with a sub in the boot.

The gear I have ordered is as follows and should make for a pretty decent setup, I hope...

DLS RS6 Splits -> http://dls.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_68
DLS CA 41 amplifier -> http://dls.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_103
JL Audio 12W0 12" 300 RMS woofer -> http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=42
Kenwood KDC-5751 head unit -> http://www.kenwood.eu/products/car/receivers/cd/KDC-5751SD/
Stinger 4 guage wiring kit -> http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/6997809/vpcsid/0/SFV/30046

So far I have built the new floor for the boot, stripped out all the old wiring and I have removed all the seats apart from the rear seat backs as they need to be in place for the sub box measurements which will be done on Wed. I have decided to re-wire the entire audio setup from scratch as well as remove the stock loom.

I'll post a few pics as soon as i have put the kids to bed, i have a 10kg 7 month old on my lap and it's proving difficult to type;)

Still to do is the following

1. Damplifier the doors to insulate the sound and provide better mid from the splits
2. Fabricate angled speakers bracket for the doors so the mids play at an upward angle instead of straight at my feet
3. Fabricate tweeter mounts for the stock dash mount points, probably from aluminium as it's easier to work with.
4. Install wiring, this will be quite a big job as all door panels will have to come off as will the dashboard.
4. Sort out dash lights, a few are blown so I'm knocking that skittle over while everything is open
5. Sort out rattles from behind the dash, 15 year old car with 336 000 km's on the clock is bound to ratlle a bit;)
6. Build angled amp mount on new boot floor and mount amp behind perspex.
7. Sort out aircon ducts, all the foam that seals the joints and swivel valves is perrished and comes out when you turn the fan up high.

As I go the list will grow longer but that's the most of what needs to happen so far.

Nice man, this looks like a decent build in motion.  Can't wait for the updates!

It's getting very messy very quickly but I'm quite excited about it. It forced me to go out and buy a multimeter;)

I'll be finishing taking the dash apart tomorrow night which will be challenging.

Ok, I installed the boot floor this morning after all the glue had dried. I had to make it in 3 layers. Bottom layer is 9mm fibre board so it is so and will hopefully dent according to the small bumps and sharp edges in the boot floor. The 2nd layer is 16mm MDF for weight to hold everything down nicely and the 3rd is a 4mm board I forget the name of. I had to use 3 different layers to stagger the shape of the boot for the best fit. Luckily it worked perfectly as the floor is quite tight. It will get covered with a charcoal mat the same colour as the rest of the cars carpeting.

well done, a new car install is always very exciting.
nice kit list,although i would suggest running an extra set of cables so that you are sorted if you ever wanted to go active on the splits.
if you listen long enough , even guy's have something to say.

Thanks and good point, I'm going to run 2 sets to the rear doors in case I want to run them from the HU or the amp. Probably go with co-axials in the rear doors at a later stage. Costing too much already.

I have heard some good things about DLS equipment. I am sure it will end up sounding first class.

love the boot lining idea!

Remember to check up your ground wiring from the battery to the chassis!

luckily your car isn't italian.

I installed a single amplifier for the woofer on my lancia fulvia and the first evening I noticed the headlights dimming when I turned up the volume.
An extra cable from the battery to the car body solved that problem. I shouldn't even mention the small push on lug they use between the alternator positive and the battery for charging it is just sad. And these where not fixem-uppers from previous owners. Italians really should stay away from electricity.

I'm sure the germans did just fine with the wiring on yours though.

the nice thing about VW is that you can go to Golwagen, buy a bigger alternator  and bolt it on.that is if you run out of power.
(sorry, a bit of useless info)

Indeed! My sister has a polo. Still paying study loans so I help her with services and what not.
Goldwagen in montague drive has seen me a few times. R350 for a complete new waterpump. Thank you!

I will be going through all of the wiring when I finish ripping the dash apart. Going to be a long few days I reckon.

A question, what/where can I get decent speaker cabling that doesn't cost more than about R10 to R15 a meter. I don't want snake oil, just some decent guage stuff that's marked so I know what is + and -.

Even for my Audi. I maintain my car for virtually nothing, thanks to Goldwagen.
