X-Box and PS3
« on: November 08, 2011, 01:44:16 pm »
Hi

I want to buy a gaming console secondhand.  What do I look out for?  Are there certain serial numbers I should miss?  Once heard a PS3 and thought the fridge had just gone on!

PS3 seems to be the favourite from a versatility point of view.... But if the one you're looking at is making fridge-like noises, I think it best you skip it!

If I was going to use it as a CD player  ;)

Seen a couple used only for a few months with packaging and receipt.

I'd rather keep my money for vinyl hence the 2nd hand route.

Go for the PS3. Much more you can do with it. (PS3 media Server for one) I have had my 250Gig version for 18 months now and still happy with it. As a DVD player I found mine to be a bit noisy and got a dedicated Sony BDP instead.

But ultimately it comes down to which games you like.

Many are made for both and some, often the best, are exclusive. I'm a Gears of war, Halo fan so XBOX was the only option for me.

If you want to have the best gaming console definetly X-Box, if you want something that is good at gaming but can also be used as a media player and blue ray player X-BOX, but for gaming X-Box wins hands down.

And if you can hear the PS3 while watching a movie, the volume is to low ;D

Have to disagree with the previous posts, if you want the best allround (grown up) gaming console, you cannot beat the PS3.

if you have young kids, then consider the Wii or the Xbox-kinect

I have a 360, and it is really nice for gaming, and I always see more games for better prices for it than the PS3. IMO the PS3 is much more solidly built, and of course more versatile. AND it has Gran Turismo, and the older force feedback Logitech Force Pro wheel works on both the PS2, PS3 and PC, which rocks (although I have the Logitech Momo wheel for PC too). I really wouldn't mind having a PS3 as well.

The old Xbox 360 was very noisy! I had the first one replaced due to RROD, and the new one is better, but still quite loud. The PS3 slim that I heard was quieter, but that could have been where it was standing.

I've had both an Xbox and PS3 2nd hand and neither were quite right. I would get a new one given the choice again. You can pick up pretty good deals, especially as Christmas comes...
LF: Cheap but decent interconnects so I can try to hear the difference, or not.

I have had both, although now only the xbox and IMO the xbox's controller is also ahead of the game compared to the ps3's
