Bicycles
« on: October 30, 2011, 05:14:11 pm »
Gentlemen,

SO i decide to get my self two bicycles, at game - didn't give it much though - as these were going to be used in for riding around the hood, taking back the movies hired the day before (etc). At the time i thought, it shouldn't be a problem - since there'l be no serious riding on it.
A few Sat's back - a mate of mine pulls in, in the am's - we take the bikes for a spin, and after riding down a few stairs - the bikes chain packed up, took it for repairs - and now packed up again from going uphill. (No Jokes)

I find the bikes to be extremely useless, and the guys who own the repair shop - are not so keen at fixing it, as they say ill always come back with something new that's broken.

SO - can anyone recommend a descent brand i can get - for the above mentioned?
I know anything with a Shimano mechanism is descent (as i've owned one - and it never broke despite any abuse  ;D).
Can i replace the mechanism with a descent one, as opposed to getting totally new bikes?

Advice please....

Thanks

#Klyv...

Like hifi, there are bikes for a>b and nice things :)

Look at the budget bikes from Giant, Trek or any of the other better bike brands (some like Raleigh make decent stuff and crap). If in doubt, go to a bike shop, with a budget in mind. Also make a list of what you need and what you don't (like suspension, discs etc). Shimano also make crap, so beware. The last time I checked, Shimano Alivio was the lowest in their range you would want.

There's also a big second hand market, especially on thehub.co.za

I hope Game didn't assemble your bikes as i've seen some shockers...

LF: Cheap but decent interconnects so I can try to hear the difference, or not.

No they didn't, i assembled it myself.

ill check out the site - and see if i can pick up anything.
As long as i can pic up something descent - before it hit Drakens Feb/March. So i have some time thus far to shop around.

Game supplied bikes are a bottomless pit of wasted money.
Upgrading the components will soon start to outweigh what you paid for the bike.
Full suspension bikes could be a bottomless pit as well, the real entry level ones weigh a ton and they come with some real crummy rims and front forks, not to even go in to the rear shocks #crappystuff

Look at a bike with discs, and here you want hydraulics, going cable activated discs with the mind of "upgrading" at a later stage, will again cost more from the word go.
If you buy a bike with rim brakes, again be very careful, you can't just slap on discs.
You have to see if the frame and fork have disc mounting tabs, first and foremost.

Then look at the hubs, are they disc hubs built on to disc rims ?
If this is the case, you are a tad better off.
The new Alivio stuff is 9 speed now and very good, actually quite damn exceptional.

Wait for the new Silverback stock to land towards end November, great value.

I'd also look on the hub, rather get a good used bike than this cheap crap game sells. I've read reports about broken handlebars and frames, and make no mistake, that DID lead to serious injuries.
I have several quality bikes, and they're all between 10 and 15 years old, with no serious problems apart from the occasional flat tire or cable adjustment...

Hi
In my opinion the Trek and Giant are a overpriced for the components you get. The Silverback and Raleigh have the same components for less $$$.
Shop around at the bike shops, they often have good deals late in the year or early next year as the following year's models are already underway or in the shop. I got some good buys like that in the past.

And please, please, please, buy a decent helmet!!!!!!

There is a new brand that will make an appearance soon called Axis, these will be the perfect balance between quality and price.

Raleigh and Silverback should be pretty good and value for money. Giant are also pretty solid, but a bit expensive. At least the components should last a while!

Why? As kids we used to ride around without any of these protectives things and we came out okay, okay, okay ;D

I certainly agree about getting a decent helmet.
