My idea for a faceplate is plain 5mm aluminium, laser cut, then anodized.  I'm gonna try tap halfway into it and screw from the back, so as to leave no screws on the face.

The rest will be sprayed matte black.

Oooooh, how original.  :)  And thanks to the aircraft industry, I can't call it a black box.

Never argue with an idiot. The people watching might not know the difference.

I'm trying to, but RS seems insistent on making this taking 5 times longer than it should... At least my toroids are no longer showing the end of March as their arrival time.  ;D

Good use of space. I take it you're using a single 500VA transformer?

Yes, but it's a mono block, so there will be two boxes like this...  :)

Something I've been wondering -- how close is "too close"? Obviously in an ideal world your transformer would be as far from other components as possible (even with low power in a XO I can hear sound leaking to other speaker if a coil is too close to a capacitor - so getting mains hum into an amp from the transformer's field would poss be an issue?).

Is there a 'magic distance' from the transformer where the magnetic field becomes inconsequential? How about shielding it?

Be more careful about ground loops and twisting your cables than transformer placing.

A normal amplifier gain normally is not enough to amplify the minute voltage picked up from a transformer.

A phono preamp has VERY high gain and things become a bit more tricky there.

But I would not waste too much time worrying about toroidal induced noise. And much more worries about grounding scheme and twisting wires that carries high current.

Mine is playing in my living room already!

It sounds absolutely great!  I'm really very impressed!

Now I need good speakers...  And a good DAC...  And a good pre...  Help...

Yip! Here is the shocker!
There is no cure.
Once you have tasted anything beyond a "House and Home" or Makro hifi You're screwed for life. That Sony is not going to cut it while you know some one is enjoying a NAD or Expertly designed and built DIY system as you sit there...
