Daylight Saving?
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:53:16 pm »
Was just wondering, does anyone know why we don't have daylight saving in SA? Seriously, it can't be THAT difficult to tell people to set their clocks back an hour during Summer so we get home an hour earlier? With so much daylight time during Summer in SA, it just seems so obvious?

Far more sensible to just say from May to August, things happen one hour later. Why change the time of day ?  It's counterintuitive.

Lived in europe for a year, and didn't have any problem doing the daylight savings thing.

You reckon? People can't even read time properly(how else do you explain the general tardiness?) ;)

I don't see why it would really be necessary in S.A. anyway. It's not like we lack for sunlight.

Agreed 100% I have also wondered about this. Either the persons responsible for making such decisions don't understand daylight saving or they assume that members of the public are too stupid to understand it. The former is an indictment and the latter is an insult.

True, but an hour of extra daylight would be great. Assuming a person finishes work at 5pm and the sun sets at 7:30pm, with daylight saving time one would have three and a half hours of daylight after work.

Probably at least 90% correct on both counts ::)

Because then you have more daylight in your day away from work!  :)  It's not the daylight available, it's what you could do with it, instead of sitting shackled to your desk until 5pm or so.

Yea, but the difference in daylight time is minor, not worth the shift twice a year.

Where I live currently actual summer is only about 2 months long (half of which you'd confuse with winter in CT) and in mid winter the sun sets at 15:30. Therefore there's a strong drive to get as much of the summer sunshine as you can. I consider that a good reason for daylight savings.

We have wonderfully moderate weather conditions in S.A., we really have no need for it.
