LF: Mini-Drill Kit
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:08:26 am »
 8)

Hi all, I'm looking for a min-dill kit or single drill?

-The options are a Dremel, Proxxon or RS?
-Problem is apparently the Proxxon is the best, but pricey and I see only one or two suppliers in SA?
-Anybody have experience with these tools? Need some advice?
-Don't want to kill the bank here, but don't want to buy cheap and have to buy again..

Thanx

I think Dremel is quite good - don't have any experience on these, but it is on the shopping list.
They feel quite solid and well put together, as most things German, and accessories galore.

Dremel at builders is now affordable, proxxon may be better, but I am not sure it can be MUCH better, and it is pricey, there are a few lying around in stores here, that never get sold... cause they twice the price of the dremels at builders...

Do yourself a favour... get the one size fits all collar, it is a 100 rand well spent... The flexible attachment thingy works very well, so find a kit with it included, otherwise it will only cost more... the cost of the dremel, is much less than the bits you'll end up buying...  ::)
OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...

The best minidrill IMO is a jewellery drill or Dentist drill, goes for R900-00 (chinese),available anywhere.Google will help.
The motor is much stronger, and they hang from your desk/table (not in the way) and very long shaft.Lots of bits available from dentist suppliers,
and used ones from dentists, sometimes free sometimes R5-00.

Dremel is Austrian, and Austria is expensive.
Proxxon is better than Dremel ,but pricing is not.

@Cirr -yup, was thinking about a jewellers drill, cause I bought .5 and 1mm drill bits from a jewellery store. Will make some enquiries from them.

@chipwelder
So even, a Dremel kit with a collar can do. Really only need it to drill circuit boards and of course the odd precision cutting and sanding.
Hmmm -Otherwise maybe just a collet adapter kit to fit the small drill bits into my Bosch cordless in the meantime.

Thanx guys.

Dremel is good and you can buy a small drillpress attachment to put it in,also many other attachments available when needed for instance i recently bought the chain saw sharpener attachment and it works wonders on my chain saw.

Proxxon for me. A real little workhorse and spins up to 20K rpm. This one is 8 years old and used every day. The previous one got stolen after abt 3 years of use.

The one in the pic is mounted on a mothasucka swivel vise but I have the drill stand and vise as well. I also have a Proxxon mini belt sander - noisy and real shite. On getting it, I tried it out on a small block of aluminium and 3mins from switchon, it stripped a gear >:( Beause it's so noisy, I never bothered to have it repaired and bought a fullsize Skil.

Strange thing I noticed with the Proxxon motor - never use it on an extension lead - even when the lead is unwound as it should be. The thing overheats.

Regarding Dremel - these days I mostly use Dremel's consumables as these seem to be of better quality.

However, if youbare only drilling a few holes, look at one of the chinese copies with accessories under R500
You will still be able to use the bits and pieces on a dremel later.
I used a china special for 3 or so years and still reckon it is the most useful tool I ever bought.

Thanx will scout the hardware places on Saturday. I see Communica might have a cheapie with all the accessories I need. Will give them a call tomorrow.
