My point: Klipsch has been manufacturing Horns for more than 60 years now, so I think "practice makes perfect" and they should have it down to a fine art. 8)

Land Rover has been manufacturing cars for more than 60 years now, so I think "practice makes perfect" and they should be reliable.... 8)

...but I still love driving one  ;D

My favorite idea for a recession resistant business - Land Rover Repair. There's always business in that field.  ;)

In 1910, as the last Englishman left Cape Town harbour, the Captain shouted: "Your sh!t will come!!!"
50 years later to the day, the first Land Rover landed on our shores... :)

6.  Out of interest - I recently listened to the R 33k Monitor Audio GX 300 speakers and was not impressed either.  Those I would definitely modify if I owned a pair.  At the price however that will not be a likely outcome.  It's not that I think I am better than anyone or can do better than anyone else - it's just that I am somewhat hard to please these days.

Finally - please relax everyone.  Nobody said the speakers were not good.  I am still of the opinion that potential buyers should audition these speakers as they do have alot to offer.

Regards,
Ian.

No worries Ian... It might be the "old age" starting to kick in now  ;) ;D

I probably also took things a bit out of context. As for Klipsch, anyone on this forum who might be interested in a real world demo, should they want to buy a pair, is more than welcome to pop into my place.
The RF-52's are set up in a proper HT room, with all kinds of damping and insulation, while the RF-82's are set up in my Bar area - not placed properly, no insulation or damping - just a room with wooden floors, couches, etc., but they still sound good... :D

My door is always open for a good session.

OK, so the RF range Klipsch is out, what other options are you considering?

They do have other ranges, but the jump in price is heavy so unfortunately I am out of the race for this one.

Yip, the next step is the Palladiums, and yes, they are very expensive.

Lot's of big words and terms, which probably only instrumentation can pick up as problem
The difference between well behaved horns/waveguides and lesser units is huge, but we'll leave the debate for another day or listening session. The differences are difficult to pick up on instrumentation but very apparent to the human ear btw. I was trying to highlight the constraints on commercial speakers and how that induced compromize doesn't always compare favourably against a best effort design (which introduce aspects not favourable to mass market acceptance).

I'm not dissing the speakers, just hilighting some design constraints on the HF side. Size constraints on HE speakers introduce much more engineering headache and necessitate a lot of listening to achieve balance over a range of listening levels.

Just for the record, the best cinema sound I have ever heard came form a large Klipsch system that was played Stereo in an incredibly well treated cinema in Holand and I am a big fan of Paul Klipsch's life work. I have wanted to do something similar to a La Scala bass horn in a multi-way system for some time.

Interesting reading.  Having heard the last two of Ian's creations including his latest design I'll take his views at face value, regardless of what name happens to adorn a commercial speaker (the man makes incredibly good speakers).  As with everything audio though, it's one's personal preferences that count, so continue to enjoy...

Man, that's an unbelievable price for those 82s...  :o

As an aside, Ian, and apologies for the late wade-in on the discussion, what amplification was used to drive the Klipschs at your audition?

Some serious looking Yamaha stereo amp and CDP.  Not sure what it was, but I was impressed to see both the CDP and amp had balanced connections.

Ian.
