DAC recommendations
« on: September 08, 2011, 05:22:09 pm »
Ok, so I got my Sennheiser HD 380 Pro, very happy :)
But now I'm looking to acquire a DAC.  I've listened to the MUSILAND 01 us, very nice, but would actually prefer something with a volume knob.
Any recommendations?  Price range probably up to R1500.

Right in the price class of a Nuforce UDAC2. Would probably be a nice option for you.

I think the only other thing in this price range is the FiiO E7 - http://www.head-fi.org/t/470899/review-fiio-e7-usb-dac-headphone-amp.  One caveat: I don't think the DAC goes higher than 16/48, but I'm speaking from memory here.

Would love to see expert side-by-side reviews of the NuForce vs the FiiO one day ...

Also check out the Firestone audio USB dac (think the fireyre) at www.emia.co.za for around R800.

Atjan, that Maverick TubeMagic D1 at http://www.mav-audio.com/base/product/tube_magic_d1 looks like a great deal.  The review on this page goes so far as to say that it's significantly better than the Cambridge DacMagic, even though it costs half the price!  Do you perhaps know what is the most affordable way to import it?!

NoSnipeLimit, how does one get hold of the Musiland 01 US?  The only place I've read about so far is eBay ...

I'm out of stock at the moment, I was waiting for the Rand to recover against the USD a little but it's not looking good at the moment...

I have FiiO E7 and Fireye II. Prefer FiiO E7 for slightly better sound and versatility: usb dac and head amp with volume control, usb power for dac + built in battery for head amp. Fireeye II is only usb dac with volume control, powered from usb. Both are 16/48

I'm embarrassed to say this, because I know they charged you a pretty packet, but they dispatched it to my local post office within 3 days of receiving it (and that included a weekend), and they charged me absolutely nothing.  And I am blown away by the quality.  The sound is both crystal clear and smooth, which works extremely well with my Marantz amp.  I cannot thank you enough for recommending this baby.  I cannot believe how good the sound quality is, and all this for only about R2300.  Stunning.  24-bit sound is out of this world.  Even 16-bit sound is unbelievable.

Well that's wonderful - I didn't want to over-praise it but i've listened to it on various systems and it is always truly fantastic IMO - glad you like it on top of which you got a real bargain!
