Impulse buy - Roland RH-50
« on: December 21, 2007, 12:26:39 pm »
So....

I went to order my Sennheiser HD595's today (because as usual you cant just walk in store and buy them down here in DBN) and the salesman was quick to point out the clearance price he had on the Roland's.

Typical me I said OK I'll take em.

For a price of only R299.00 these are a revelation for me and IMO put the R700.00 Senn HD 465/485 to shame. I compared them to my HD202's seeing as they are in similar price ranges and the Roland's are faaaaar and away more comfortable. They are less bass heavy than the 202's which made listening to Katie Melua and similar atyles more enjoyable, open and airy (hauling out all the reviewer's superlatives here ;D)

For my rock, blues and metal I'll stick with the 202's (until my 595's arrive) but for pretty much anything else the Rolands are IMO more enjoyable.

For everyday listenening (no need for an amp here) give em a try ;)

Sorry not criticising your purchase, but this just shows how tastes and perceptions differ. A colleague in my office have the same HPs that he bought with an electronic drumset and he once borrowed the Senn 415s that I use at the office and afterwards wanted to throw the Rolands away as he said, and I quote "They are KAK!"

I did listen to the Rolands and they did not sound bad, but to me had a "thin" sound compared to both my Senns.

Maybe there is once again a lesson in this to everyone, what sounds bad to one person may sound fantastic to another and vice versa. That does not mean one is wrong and the other right, its just your personal taste ;)

I think Cans are even more subjective than loudspeakers. Like I said I'm not going to use them for all my listening but as I type this I'm listening to Leigh Nash, and for this style of music I prefer them ;D however this I'm sure will ALL change when my 595's arrive ;D ;D ;D

But for a non demanding, low output source, these are worth an audition, note audition ;D

BWAHAHAHAH

On a more serious note, the Roland's like the HD202's are a closed back design which present different listening characteristics to the open back design of the HD4xx your friend listened to after the Roland's

Quite right, both my Senns are "open back" designs. I wanted to describe the Rolands as "claustephobic", but could find the correct spelling of the word, so excuse the phonetic version ;D

The guy that owns glenwood music is one funny dude.

He is the choir master for a parish in Musgrave road.

Very animated, hell of a nice guy though.
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.
