Thinking of dipping into the Blu-Ray format - question
« on: December 12, 2007, 07:25:58 am »
Hi all,

I am thinking of getting the Samsung BD-P1400 now available locally.  This is a profile 1.0 player.  All I want to know is whether I will be able to watch the new movies designed for profile 1.1.  I am not worried about PiP at all and never watch the special features on a disc.  So... does this mean that I will be able to watch the newer movies but that I just wont be able to access the profile 1.1 specific special features.

Also would I be better off buying a PS3 as my Blu-Ray player instead of the Samsung (I like the idea of a stand-alone player and wouldn't use the PS3 for games - I have an Xbox) as it is able to be upgraded to profile 1.1 - also it is cheaper but not by much when you buy the remote.

Cheers
Douw

Personally I'd wait a little onger before getting into Blu-Ray.

Although if i were to buy a player I'd opt for just that a player and not a gaming machine that can play Blu-Ray discs too.

Want too impressed with the PS3's player functionality when i reviewed it.

Hi Douw, for obvious reasons I can't advise against buying the Samsung, nor can I advise you on what other make/model to buy. However, if you take a look at one or two of the other threads on this Forum, you'll see that Blu-ray and HD-DVD are too close to each other in the support stakes overseas for comfort, which means we may well end up with yet another VHS/Betamax, SACD/DVD-A debacle, that once again is going to leave the consumer poorer. Your best choice at the moment might well be to take a wait-and-see attitude.

Andrew I agree.
He can't even spell "wasn't" properly  ;D ;D ;D
Joel, just taking a stab at you here mate  ;)
I however agree on the blu-ray issue.
I connected my dvd player this weekend via component video sockets to the lcd. and I must say that the quality is way more than enough for me and the family.

Hi all,

Thanks for the quick and very informative replies.

I definitely agree that the race between BR and HD DVD is way too close too call at this point in time and in my opinion HD DVD is a better format for consumers (region free and copy protection is not enforced plus better pricing etc) BUT here is my problem...

I did a bit of hunting for info on HD DVD from the distributer of Toshiba in SA - what a joke.  Toshiba itself has like 5 Japanese guys representing them here and the distributor didn'r even know what I was talking about when I called them.

So... in SA at the moment the support for BR hardware and software is far better than HD DVD (have only seen two stores stock HD DVD software in JHB) and I really want to start utilising my HDTV ( I paid a lot of money for it).

So yeah I agree - I am taking a risk in going BR now but so what - by the time this "war" is settled the player prices would have come down and if HD DVD wins I'll just get one of those.  Bearing this in mind - should this not be my decision support - at least if HD DVD wins I can still use the PS3 for games.  If I buy the Samsung I may have a doorstop.

So lets imagine for a moment that BR is the only HD format - which one would you buy - the Samsung standalone player that is profile 1.0 onlybut is a standalone player or the PS3 that will  be upgradeable to profile 1.1 but is also a games machine?  Is there any other compelling reasons to buy the one over the other?

By the way - other HiFi mags have given the PS3 a very favourable review as an affordable BR player...

Cheers

Don't have the review in hand, but if I recall correctly, there was a bit of a process involved in getting the PS3 to change from playing a PS3 game, to playing a Blu-ray disc - you couldn't just insert the disc, press play and sit back and enjoy. So the convenience factor is not there. Possibly the other hifi mags were too blinded by the PS3 hype!  ;)

By nature of my position at the magazine I can't give advice on what makes to buy, but there are plenty others here who I am certain will give you their viewpoints.

Leave Joel alone! He was typing that at 6 in the morning, whilst concentrating on the review that Andrew is whining about ;D

Other overseas mags ? Cant compare them to our local AVSA, AVSA are not driven by the need to sell advertising space ;D

(Andrew, I'll provide my banking details via PM ;D ;D )
