Bench Grinder
« on: August 21, 2011, 07:06:08 pm »
I'm looking for advice on a bench grinder. I purchased the 250watt Ryobi from builders warehouse for R599 today but I'm not happy with the power so I will be returning it. With a buffing wheel atatched it takes very little pressure to stop the wheel turning.

No I need advice on make/model alternatives. I see Makro have an Einhell 350watt 200mm jobbie for R899 which is an option.

Should I be looking at other brands/models and if so where can they be bought?

I think something around 3500 RPM and 400 watts wqould be a good bet and sufficient for anything I may need to do in the future.

I must say, the Ryobi stuff I've had in the past has never impressed me at all.

Ended up buying the Bosch Professional range after a short while due to not being happy with other brands. All my automotive tools are the Bosch Professional range, I won't buy anything else.

I had an Einhell mini hand grinder(Dremel) which was really good until my dog decided it look like fun to use as a chew toy. Replaced it with a Dremel 4000.

Yeah, I'm buying the Bosch dark blue pro stuff now as well, either that or DeWalt or AEG but that gets pricey very quickly. These cheap ass Ryobi drills/sanders/jigsaws and wotnot are just not good enough if you want to keep them for 15 years.

Yeah, good tools aren't cheap.

I have the Bosch GSM 200 bench grinder. Will give it the thumbs up for anyone wanting to get something that will last.

That grinder looks pretty good, 700 watter as well which is way better than the 250 watter I have. Pity about the price though:(

Look in the pawnshops, I found one made in 1987 by a Tiawanese company which is 900W,for R250-00.
I also have a big old one(1,5kw,1972) that I bought in the Junkmail for a grand.
Impossible for me or my guys to break.

Check the body,if it has a boep and you can`t put a flat bar from one disc to the other, the motor is worth it,
will definitely be big enough. All Wallmart(Makro,Game,Builders, etc.) grinders are underrated for all work, but chisel sharpening.

Almost forgot,

If you buy used, ask for a demo at pawnshop or private. If they are rude or otherwise you have a clear answer,
or if they smile so wide you see all fillings (I forgot,it`s Cape Town ;D)you also have a clear answer, and a final check
is the eyes,if they dart around and can`t look you in the face,a nice big red warning sign(Neon Red) must come up behind their heads.

Only a psychopath can pass that, then you run so that not one of your shoes touch surface beneath you,
pressing car remote forcefully/painfully and polishing 2 tyres on tar/gravel while turning head gently
upward and giving thanks to life.

One of the more colourful responses I've ever seen, thanks for the chuckle (and advice);)

I bought my bench grinder from Toolquip & Allied, Maitland Industrial Park, Voortrekker Road, Maitland. Ask to speak to Jonathan or any other of the friendly guys there. It's all pro stuff at excellent prices. No affiliation.

If you try and stop the grinder I have here, it will fling you through a two-course brick wall ;D

Keep in mind a grinder is a messy affair to use. Wear goggles and be very careful using it.

Thanks Mafioso, I did my high school career in a technical high school so I'm very familiar with the more powerful stuff as well as the safety precautions that need to be taken.

Bosch is very, very good, both green and blue
Either way you will be set for life with a good piece of equipment.
Green is a weekend worker, but Blue Bosch is hands down the best in my workshop, incl Metabo

I have the Bosch Professional drilling machines. Can't fault them at all.

The only one that I've seen which would give it a run for its money from a quality aspect is the DeWalt, but they were quite a bit more. I don't use them very much, so didn't see the point in spending more than I was going to on the Bosch Pro's.
