I hate Diana Krall

Hello my name is Leon and I hate DK.

OK, hate is much too strong a word, especially since she hardly evokes any emotion in me except maybe boredom, but I just have to get this out of my system.

I've been playing "Live in Paris" in my car now for a while and it just does not get to me (and I have to get the CD out of that system as well)

I know well recorded sparse instrumentation make great demo CDs as it doesn't really tax any hifi to the limit, and it's not polite to not like the demo music during a demo when it is de facto established demo material.
It's always been my problem that much of the music I like are relatively badly recorded and don't sound so good loud as I thought it did 20 years ago.

On the upside, I really really like "Putumayo - Tango around the World" very very much. Absolutely every song on there is charged with emotion and the "passion" that tango represents. Much of it is like listening to early Bob Marley - the tango-ness is just barely recognisable and not a blatant as a typical "Holywood" or "MTV" tango/reggae representation would be.

I think I'll swop DK for "Putumayo - New Orleans Playground", the other gem I found...

Ouch.

While I'll admit that Live in Paris was a major letdown, discs like Girl in the Other Room and When I look in your Eyes are sublime. to me anyway.

I think she is a phenomenal artist! Her music is delicate and must be savored like a good wine. Its not for on-da-go consumption.

Hey, I like most laid-back vocal Jazz,  but lets admit - DK can be fo*k*en dreary given half a chance, and she seems to have (or lack) the personality to match.

Same applied to Astrid Gilberto - sublime vocalist, but saw her on stage at the Lincoln Centre in NY, and she just stood there, pulling her hair back from time to time, like the legendary Nana Mouskouri!

Well I won't say I hate DK. She just doesn't do all that much for me. To the point where I find myself by-passing 'Girl in the next room' for many other albums I have.

I liked Live in Paris. IMO, the band was amazing. "When I look in your eyes" was superb, not so sure about the latest stuff.

I absolutely love her earlier albums - Love Scenes, Stepping Out, Always Trust Your Heart. Her CD "All For You" remains one of my all time favourites. I remember in my late teens being very broke and spending my last R120 to buy that cd.

I got put off when she became too commercial and started including orchestral scores in her songs. Her last couple of albums have been forgettable. Live in Paris was not too bad, I thought.

errrr...

just got home, and the krall that i was dissapointed with is actually "Live from Rio". Must give live from Paris a try, will get it next time i do an amazon order.

The "Live from Paris" DVD is excellent, specially for the double bass player as well as the other band members - all exceptionally good.
