2 way stereo speaker build
« on: August 03, 2011, 03:27:28 pm »
I'm going to attempt doing this myself and need a bit of guidance as to what to build.

Floor standers or stand mounters, either way I'm not fussed. I like tight bass, it doesn't need to be too low down either.

Questions I have are
1. What size drivers should I use?
2. What type of wood or can I use whatever I fancy?
3. Tweeters?

Any build ideas? I like the sound from the Mission M33i's I listened to a little while ago and the look was pretty good as well.

What about JimGore's Litil speakers... They look absolutely fantastic!

What's your budget?

I would say around R2500, probably be easier to buy a set but I'd like to try a build.

This is also from a novice speaker builder, so verify everything at least twice.  ;D

MDF/Supawood is best according to many speaker builders. It has no cavities, has good damping properties and is uniform throughout, so you won't get one light plank and one heavy plank. You can always do veneers etc on the mdf.

Driver size isn't as important as the properties of the driver, these suit a recommended enclosure size and type. I would select a ballpark size in litres and narrow down driver selection that way, and then budget and then recommendations from the other diy people and internet. This is just what I would do, not necessarily the right way round.

I think it is best to start with the bass driver, and then select the tweeter from there.

Oh, even though I didn't follow my own advice on this one, well sort of, most other builders will suggest a proven recipe for your speaker, ie drivers, enclosure shape and size and a crossover diagram.

Like a recipe on Zaph's website: http://www.zaphaudio.com/

Sjoe, Visaton has some very nice projects.

I think after taking a look I'm keen on this one.

I know, I change from 2 to 3 way.

Question now is where do I get the gear locally or is it import only?

Does anyone see a problem with my choice or can suggest somethnig in the same range but better?

Chat to Silver.Audio. He is currently building this very set. I believe NoizyBoy is an agent of Visaton so that's always a good place to start. I suspect the drivers alone will blow your budget though.... Eish, this happened to me too.  :-[

Damn, really?

Best I get a quote sorted out then before I start. I don't mind spendig the 2500 on the speaker part and finding other dollah for wood, paint etc.

Juggy, also keep the price of the xo parts in mind, some of them are super simple and really cheap, but other designs get quite expensive.

Now, double that figure to get a real figure for what it's going to cost. Not trying to put you off, just trying to be realistic. For that kinda money you better off buying secondhand.

Like I said, I'm not trying to piss on any batteries here, just saying that it'll be hard to DIY what Juggy wants for R3k.

No worries, my batteries are covered in duck oil. ;)

I agree with you 100%. My hair raised when I started doing the math. Worth it though I think, so I'll just spread it out over some time.
